How to Fix a Timer Knob When the Washer Cycle Will Not Advance

The timer knob helps users select their desired settings on the washer. The knob can crack and no longer stay in position on the timer switch shaft or spin loosely and not engage the switch. The washer is then unable to execute the specified cycle. When replacing the timer knob, please visit the button below to search for your washer's model number and find the correct part.

What is a Timer Knob?

The timer knob, also known as the control knob or the timer dial, is the plastic piece that you physically turn in order to choose the different cycles on your washer.

Where is the Timer Knob Located?

The timer knob is found mounted on the shaft of the timer switch. It will be located on your control panel or console, typically at the top back of your washer.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Timer Knob

  1. As with all repairs, begin by unplugging your washer. If you have a gas washer, shut off the gas supply and disconnect the gas lines.
  2. Additionally, be sure to turn off your hot and cold water supplies.
  3. Ensure that the knob is on the “off” position.
  4. If there is a retaining clip on the knob, remove it using a pair of needle-nose pliers.
  5. Pull the knob off its shaft and inspect the knob for cracks.

How to Install a New Timer Knob

  1. Identify whether your knob is one- or two-piece (this will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer).
  2. If two-piece containing a skirt and/or washers, install these first by sliding them onto the shaft. If one-piece, skip directly to the next step.
  3. Push the new knob into place on the shaft and thread it on if necessary.
  4. Reinstall the knob's retaining clip if it was previously removed. Now your repair is complete!
