How to Fix a Noise Filter When the Washer Cycle Will Not Advance

The noise filter blocks the electromagnetic waves produced by the washer during its cycle and prevents it from damaging the control board. If it fails, it is unable to protect the control board and the washer can become stuck on a cycle. When replacing the noise filter, please visit our Washer's Filter page below, and search for your washer’s model number to find the correct part for it.

What is a Noise Filter?

A noise filter, or a noise suppressor, cuts down the amount of electromagnetic noise that your washer makes. The noise filter is found in the top panel of your washer. If your noise filter is faulty, you may hear a buzzing noise when the washer is running.

Where is the Noise Filter Located?

The noise filter is usually found in the top panel of your washer, but may vary according to your model type. Refer to your manual or any diagrams for assistance.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Noise Filter

As with all repairs, begin by unplugging your washer. If you have a gas washer, shut off the gas supply and disconnect the gas lines. Additionally, be sure to turn off your hot and cold water supplies.

  1. Shift your washer forward and away from the laundry room wall.
  2. Place a towel underneath the hose connection to catch any water that leaks out.
  3. Loosen the metal fittings on the hoses at the faucets with hose pliers and remove them from the laundry wall.
  4. Remove any screws securing the top panel before detaching it from the washer using a screwdriver.
  5. Disconnect the wire harness from the noise filter.
  6. Remove the noise filter from its housing. It may be secured by screws or locking tabs.
  7. Inspect the filter for cracks or damage.

How to Test the Noise Filter

If your noise filter is faulty, you may hear a buzzing noise when the washer is running.

  1. Set your multimeter to read in ohms on the lowest setting (some devices call this mode ‘RX1’ or ‘X1’). If your multimeter has a setting that tests for continuity by making an audible sound, you may set it to that as well.
  2. Touch the probes onto the wire terminals and check the reading – the ideal reading is between 20 and 50 ohms. Alternatively, listen out for a sound.
  3. Replace the filter if it reads otherwise or if it does not make a sound.

How to Install a New Noise Filter

  1. Reconnect the wire harness to the new noise filter.
  2. Secure the filter in place with its respective screws or locking tabs.
  3. Reinstall the top panel of the washer.
  4. Reconnect the inlet hoses onto the washer and the water supplies.
  5. Push the washer back into position. Your repair is now complete!
