Trash Compactor would not stop after cycle and would make a ton of noise
I had a couple of problems with my trash compactor, it was present in the home when we bought it. First it wouldn't turn on, the on/off switch was broken so I replaced the switch and knob assembly. Then the unit would run through a cycle and wouldn't stop at the end and would make a loud banging noise. My directional switch was the suspect at first because it was in bad shape to begin with, looked like it had gotten stuck at some point and bent the arm. I replaced the directional switch and it didn't help. Then I realized that the on/off/start panel showed that the start button was stuck in the on position. This was delivering constant current and wouldn't allow the unit to stop. DON'T spend $150 for a new start/on/off panel. I took the panel off and separated the front from the back to expose the buttons from the inside. The start button was stuck so I took the parts out and reassembled them, they're all little plastic and metal pieces that interlink. After I reassembled the buttons' insides I reassembled the panel and reinstalled it. The unit works fine now. Read more...

The bar that the rollers fit into has a lip on the front.
The lip on the front of the bar had to be bent so it was almost straight out so a wrench could be put on the nut to remove the old roller. There was not room enough to get on the nut with pliers or wrench and turn it. much more difficult than the instructions laid out. Read more...

Replacing older kitchen appliances with stainless steel - but didn't want to buy a new $900.00 Trash Compactor.
Removed Trash Compactor and dismantled the front panel, control panel, foot pedal, floor sweep and handle. Ordered a stainless steel front panel, which arrived in three days. Primed and painted the old almond-colored components flat black - looked "OK", but not GREAT ....Then, checked to see if this site had those same parts in black. Bingo! Ordered replacement parts, everything available except the control console, and then reassembled everything. Here's a tip - be careful to reassemble the electrical connections in the control panel VERY ACCURATELY! Looks like a new, stainless-steel and black appliance. I'm up about $600.00. Wife thinks I'm a genius - what's not to like about that? Read more...

THEN READ INFO TO KNOW MY SWITCH WAS NORMALLY OFF WHEN DOOR WAS CLOSED SO I WIRED IT AS INSTRUCTED AND POPPED THE NEW SWITCH BACK INTO THE SLOT. HAD TO ARANGE THE WIRING BEHIND IT TO ALLOW THE SWITCH TO LIE FLUSH IN SLOT SO IT WAS NOT PUSHED OUT FROM BEHIND AGAINST FOAM INSULATION. Read more...
