How To Fix Stump Grinder That Does Not Cut

How To Repair Stump Grinder Cutter That Will Not Move

Drive Belt
If the stump grinder engine runs but the cutter does not, it may indicate a worn or damaged drive belt. The drive belt transfers the motion of the crankshaft and flywheel, which is powered by the engine, to turn the drive shaft and blade on the grinder. If this belt slips or breaks, the blade will not be able to turn even though the engine may still run. The drive belt will wear over time from regular use and will likely require replacing at some point during the life of the machine. Remove the belt cover to inspect the drive belt. If the belt is worn or broken and needs to be replaced, refer to your user manual for the proper replacement part number.

Idler Assembly
The idler assembly is located under the belt cover. Its function is to keep proper tension on the drive belt, and also to stop the belt from slipping out of place. The drive belt is attached to the flywheel at one end, and to a drive shaft that spins the grinder assembly at the other. The idler is a third pulley that is linked into the drive belt path. It helps to stop the belt from slipping so it continuously runs straight without wobbling, and also allows the operator to adjust the tension of the drive belt, should it become loose or need to be replaced. The idler can fail if the bearing inside of it breaks which will stop it from rotating. This can stop the drive belt from moving at full speed, which will hinder the machines ability to operate at full power.

Engagement Cable
The engagement cables function is to allow the grinder to start turning once the engine has reached its minimum speed to drive the grinder mechanism. The engine is equipped with this mechanism to allow the engine to start and idle without continuously being forced to turn the grinder. This extends the life of the engine by stopping it from being overworked in certain circumstances. Once the engine has reached its ideal speed, the spring-loaded engagement cable engages and allows the drive belt to turn the grinder assembly. If the engagement cable breaks or is not adjusted properly, the blades will not turn. The engagement cable will wear over time, and can be replaced with relative ease. Refer to your user manual for the proper part number if replacing this cable.
