How to Fix a Clutch Assembly for a Washer That Has Spinning Issues

If your washer is not spinning, there may be a problem with the clutch assembly. The clutch is vulnerable to wearing out from regular usage. If it is worn down, you may notice a scraping sound or a loud noise during the spin cycle, which can also cause a burning smell or leave brake dust—which looks like shavings—under the machine.

What is a Washer Clutch?

In top-loading washers, some models have a clutch assembly to attach the wash basket to the input shaft of the transmission.  The clutch assembly is designed to latch the clothes basket to the transmission input shaft so that the clothes basket spins. The pads rub against the housing and, eventually, that wears them out.

Where is the Washer Clutch Located?

The clutch is found below the outer tub in your washer, usually attached to the basket drive assembly. On some models you may find the clutch located on top of the transmission.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect a Washer Clutch

  1. After disconnecting the appliance from the power source, open your washer’s cabinet to locate the clutch assembly. It will usually be found below the outer tub, attached to the basket drive assembly. Depending on your model, you may need to remove the drive motor and/or transmission to access it.
  2. If your clutch assembly is mounted below the transmission, you will not need to open the cabinet, but instead will need to place the washer on its back.
  3. You will need to remove the belt cover, the belt, pulley, and shifter assembly to access the clutch assembly.

How to Test a Washer Clutch

You'll want to inspect your clutch assembly for any signs of damage, burning, fraying, or wear. If you find any of the those symptoms, you will need a replacement clutch assembly.

How to Install a New Washer Clutch

Direct Drive Motor Clutch

  1. For a washer with a direct drive motor clutch, make sure you use the same color spring on the new clutch assembly as was in the old one.
  2. Snap the anti-rattle clip in place and slide the new clutch assembly onto the transmission shaft.
  3. Hook the retainer spring in place, then install the e-ring and thrust washer.

Bottom-Mounted Clutch

  1. If your clutch is mounted on the bottom of the transmission you will want to install the components of the clutch assembly in the opposite order you removed them.
  2. Start by installing the new spring then slide the cam and gear assembly onto the transmission shaft and press into place to lock the tabs.
  3. Put the shifter back into position and install the new pulley onto the transmission shaft.
  4. Roll the belt back over the pulleys and reinstall the belt cover.
