How to Fix a Suspension Plate for a Washer That is Shaking and Moving

Excessive shaking and moving from your washer can stem from an issue with your washer’s suspension plate – which is important to the core of your washer, since it allows the inner tub to move more freely during the spinning and washing cycles. If broken or worn down, will lead to worse consequences like hitting the outer cabinet. But we have a guide just below, so you can figure out if this plate is the cause of your washer’s issues!

What is a Suspension Plate?

The suspension plate on a washer holds and secures the tub of the washer suspended so that it can move freely within the cabinet of the washer during the full load cycle, depending on the movement needs at that time. This plate suspends the tubs above the bottom of the frame and connects them to the suspension rods.

Where is the Suspension Plate Located?

The suspension plate in a washer is typically located at the bottom of the cabinet. It is connected to the four corners of the cabinet’s frame by the suspension rods. Refer to the 3D diagram below for more information on where you can locate the plate on your model.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Suspension Plate

Replacing a washer suspension plate can be a hearty task, even for experienced DIY-ers, as it requires you to disassemble most of the washer. However, if you enjoy a challenge or want to give it a shot, we have you covered. Due to the number of components you'll be removing, it makes sense to clear a workspace to keep everything together alongside all components and fasteners. It may also be helpful to take photographs as you complete each step, to aid in reassembling after you've completed your suspension plate replacement.

  1. Disconnect the lid switch and any clips that are locking the back of the washer from the cabinet.
  2. Remove the cabinet and store it to one side.
  3. Remove the fabric dispenser, and agitator, which should reveal the drive lug.
  4. Unthread the drive lug nut and set it aside, followed by pushing out the tub ring.
  5. Tilt the machine forward and wiggle the basket so it comes free, it should lift off the drive lug at this stage.
  6. Next, some items need to be removed from the tub itself, starting with the electrical harness, any retaining clips, and the water pressure hose.
  7. Release the pump from the motor assembly along with any hoses (towels on the floor will be useful here for any water that may have gathered in the hoses).
  8. Take the back off the washer.
  9. At this stage you should be able to turn all that remains upside down, allowing you to access and remove the motor and transmission.
  10. Remove the springs, which will allow you to remove the base of the washer. You'll finally be able to access your suspension plate.
  11. If you notice any wear or abrasion on your suspension plate, it may be the cause of your vibration and movement during the spin cycle, and will need to be replaced.

How to Install a New Suspension Plate

If you've determined that your washer's suspension plate needs to be replaced, the majority of the work will involve the reassembly of your washer after installing the new plate.

  1. Set the new suspension plate on top of the frame assembly. It doesn't matter which way the plate is rotated; it should float nicely into place. The replacement of this part is the least challenging part of the process, it should slot into place without much work.
  2. Repeat the steps involved in disassembly in reverse order, referencing photographs you took during teardown, and ensuring that the same parts are re-installed using the correct components and fasteners.
  3. Congratulations, you have completed not only a very challenging repair, but the process of completely disassembling and re-assembling your washer!
