How to Fix an Agitator Directional Cog for a Washer That is Noisy and Leave Marks on Clothes

Some models of top-load washers have a dual action agitator, which is gentler on your clothing. The top half moves in one direction, forcing the laundry down to the bottom half of the tub. The lower half of the agitator can move in both directions to ensure that your laundry gets thoroughly cleaned. The top half of the agitator uses agitator directional cogs in order to operate. When these parts fail, you will often hear a crunching or grinding noise. You can use the information below, such as the sound clips and video guides, to help you determine if the sound your washer is making is due to these cogs.

What are Agitator Directional Cogs and Where are they Located?

Agitator directional cogs, sometimes referred to as agitator dogs, are often used to operate the upper portion of dual action agitators. These cam-shaped dogs engage the cogs on the inner surface of the agitator as it turns in one direction, and then release when the agitator reverses direction. This allows the upper portion of the agitator to ‘ratchet’ in one direction while the bottom half will agitate in both directions. The directional cogs are made of hard plastic and will wear out with normal use.

What Type of Noise Can You Expect?

When they become too smooth to properly engage the cogs on the agitator, they will start slipping and make a grinding or crunching noise. You will also notice that the top portion of the agitator does not move smoothly or doesn’t move at all.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Agitator Directional Cogs in a Washing Machine

  1. Unplug your washing machine and remove the fabric softener dispenser or top cover, depending on your model.
  2. Locate your agitator cogs. You may need to remove the agitator cap, top, or base, depending on your model, to access the cogs.
  3. Visually inspect the cogs for discoloration, wear, or damage. You should also look to see if any cogs are missing.
  4. If your cogs have any of the symptoms described above, you will need a set of replacement directional cogs.

How to Install a New Agitator Directional Cogs

  1. There are four cogs, or dogs, and we recommend replacing all four at the same time.
  2. Place the cogs in their designated spots around the cam and replace the retainer.
  3. The assembly can then be inserted back into the agitator.
