How to Fix a Clutch Assembly for a Washer That is Noisy and Leave Marks on Clothes

If the clutch assembly in your washer is starting to fail, you’ll experience more symptoms than just the noise! You may notice a burning smell, or that there is still water in the tub at the end of the cycle. The squealing noise and burning smell will be due to excess friction from the pads wearing out. The water left in the tub will happen if the tub isn’t able to spin, as the clutch assembly connects the wash basket to the transmission. You can use the information below, such as the sound clips and video guides, to help you determine if the sound your washer is making is due to the clutch assembly.

What is a Clutch Assembly and Where is It Located?

The clutch assembly is designed to latch the clothes basket to the transmission input shaft so that the clothes basket spins. The pads rub against the housing and, eventually, that wears them out. The clutch is found on the drive shaft in the bottom of your washer. If the clutch becomes worn and is no longer operating properly, your clothes will remain soaked after the cycle is finished.

What Type of Noise Can You Expect?

You will know the clutch is broken if it is making a scraping sound or leaving brake dust—which looks like shavings—under the machine. Some other signs it is time to replace the clutch are if your washer is noisy while running, there is a burning smell, or it is making a squealing sound.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Clutch Assembly in a Washing Machine

  1. Disconnect the washer from the power source.
  2. The clutch assembly is usually found attached to the basket drive assembly, between the outer tub and transmission. Some are mounted between the transmission and the drive pulley. Remove the clutch assembly in order to inspect it. You may need to remove the cabinet, drive motor, and/or transmission to access the clutch, depending on your model.
  3. Looking for any signs of burning, damage, or wear, visually inspect your clutch assembly.
  4. If you find any issues while inspecting it, you will need a replacement clutch assembly.

How to Install a New Clutch Assembly

  1. Once the transmission and clutch assembly has been removed from the washer, the clutch assembly can now be replaced.
  2. You will need a basic hand tool to remove and then add the various components.
  3. Make sure you use the correct color spring on the new clutch.
