The agitator moves freely from the tub.
Remove the auger (the spiral shaped part) by putting a Philips screw driver with at least 4" long shank into the hole at the base the auger (you'll have to feel for it as it isn't visible from the top), and hold the agitator with the one hand and smack the screw driver handle clockwise. It should turn 1/4 turn, then lift the auger off the agitator. After removing the auger (looking straight down) you'll see the bolt that holds on the agitator. With a 7/16 socket on an extension, (while holding the agitator) turn counter-clockwise the bolt. After removing the agitator you'll likely see a grayish colored paste caked on the drum and transmission shaft clean it up with damp clothes, as well the shaft making sure there is no residue left on the splines of the shaft.
Now you are ready to reassemble, doing everything opposite of the removal.
