Hub spring was all mangled
Apparently the recoil unit has to be pretty tight. Any looseness will cause the spring to come loose and get mangled when you pull the recoil starter. Take 4 screws out of the recoil unit, remove the old spring, put the new spring in and reassemble. Be really sure that the new spring fits into the holes in the starter housing pulley and hub and that the hub is tight.
