When the heating circuit is activated, it melts any ice that has formed on the evaporator coils, then the cooling system is started again. If ice builds up the evaporator, it reduces the airflow and the efficiency of your freezer. If the defrost timer has failed, it can cause the temperature in your fridge or freezer to get too warm, or it can cause ice buildup since the heating circuit will not be activated.
