LSG1000T Maytag Dryer - Instructions

Removed Front Panel, Filter/Drum Support and tumbler. Noted metal shavings inside cabinet on my right side. Found right front glide strip completely gone and left side deteriorated. Also spun rear drum rollers and noted noise and slight wobble on right side. Removed snap rings, washers and rollers and examined both shafts. No scoring noted so I cleaned them with mineral spirits. Used excellent website tools to rapidly identify parts needed and placed order. Parts arrived second day (w/ standard shipping option). Installed drum support wheels using new washers from kit (discarded old,thinner ones) and reused snap rings. Moving to front support, drilled out old rivets (4) from front glides with 1/4 inch bit. Inserted cork portion first followed by metal piece (I think it was teflon)and installed the rivets. Two observations here. First there were no instructions and, since my old guides were completely gone, I had to guess at the orientation. There is a pertruding tab on both pieces which I oriented to toward the drum. Once it is in its pretty obvious that the orientation is correct but you might ponder it for a minute or so. Second, one of my rivets didn't flatten out completely (probably operator error). I'm pretty sure there would have been plenty of clearance but I drilled it out and replaced it anyway. Bottton line, having a couple of extra rivets on hand might not be a bad idea. Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly. The biggest issue will be the drive belt. Since I have replaced mine before (twenty five years old and two kids with cloth diapers -- its had alot of use) I draped the belt over the back portion of the drum before I re-install the tumbler unit. Get a helper or a piece of wood to support the tumbler and then reach over the top to position the belt. Now the tough part -- especially if you have big hands like mine. You need to reach in and fish the belt onto the motor pulley and then the tensioner. It may take two or three trys but you'll get it. Then I loosely installed the front drum support. At this point rotate the drum by hand to position the belt and run your hand around the inside of the tumbler to check the felt seal front and back. Tighten the front drum support, reinstall the front panel and you are done.
Note. I chose to do everything from the front. There is a panel in the rear that will give you access to the motor. If you have the room and and can get easy access to the rear panel, it will make installing the belt easier. I don't so I chose to work everythig from the front. Timewise I suspect it is about even.

Took 2 screws out of front panel, set it to the side. Took 4 screws out of next panel. Remove guard over the thermo switch, 2 screws . Remove panel that held blower wheel in place. Took e-ring clip off of shaft, then took needle nose pliers and remove retainer clip, replaced blower wheel.

Part Select has great step by step instructions on how to repair things. The problem is, I went by what others said probably was the problem. I installed one roller and it didnt fix the problem. So I order the other one and the belt idler roller. Still no fix. The felt and pads are still good, so I take apart the blower and found the problem. I now have that on order. If the rollers and shaft look good, they probably are.

i took front cover off,then removed front drum support. pulled out dryer basket and replaced wheels and shafts. problem solved!!!

opened the dryer, cleaned link out. replaced roller.

Removed the door which gave access to remove the front panel. Then removed screws that hold down the top. Lifted the top, finished removing all of the screws holding the drum cover. Lifted the drum up and slid it forward which gave access to the rollers in the back. I needed snap ring pliers to remove the rollers. Cleaned and greased the shafts, installed the new rollers and put it back together. All is working fine and quiet.

I followed the descriptions from other do-ti-yourselfers on your web site and the "fix" was quick and easy. It took me longer to file my snap-ring pliers , made in China of course, to fit the snap-rings than it did to make the repair.

When the dryer noise grew to an unbearable level, professional opinion indicated that it was "definitely" caused by the drum support rollers. First I ordered the wrong rollers and Parts Select was kind enough to let me return them. Then I got the right parts and with internet-sourced instructions, they were relatively easy to replace, although it did require removal of the drum. But that didn't solve the problem. Another round of research said that the noise was "probably" the blower fan. I ordered the right fan and in much less time than it took to install the support rollers, I put in the new blower fan (it didn't require removal of the drum). That solved the problem. While the support rollers may wear out, I strongly suggest that you look at the blower fan first when the dryer makes too much noise. It's a cheaper and easier repair and that part is more likely to cause the rumble.

Replaced the roller and shaft. The bearing on the roller had worn out and then worn down the shaft. We let this go on for over a year. The shaft was worn half away. Found the service manual for my dryer online and used it as a guide to taking it apart. First door, then a couple of screws. Removed belt, then drum. Replaced rollers and shaft. The damaged parts were obvious. The rollers and shafts require the socket and snap ring pliers. There was a layer of rust dust all over the inside of the dryer. Vacuumed out all of the lint and rust. Put everything back together. Works great now, no squeaking.

Replaced the glide bearings on the front of the dryer since the bearings were worn and the front of the tub showed signs of wear. This did not fix the screeching noise. Turns out it was the belt idler pulley. It spun freely and without making noise when I spun it with my finger. However, when I placed a little tension on it and spun it slowly I was able to duplicate the noise. I removed the roller and lubricated the arm it rides on. It hasn't made the noise since.

I had the dryer repaired for the same thing by a "professional" 3 years ago. When it started making the same noise again, my son was here and said he thought he could fix it. We ordered the drum support roller kit, which was what was replaced before. After my son took it apart he decided we should also order the roller shaft as it was worn. He also realized the "professional" had installed the wrong drum support roller kit and installed the rollers backwards, which might have something to do with the shaft also wearing. It's working fine now.

I unscrewed 2 screw's from bottom of dryer and lifted off front. Removed 4 5/16 screw's and lifted off front drum. Removed belt and took out drum. Removed front drum roller's and replaced them. Used snap ring pliers. They are a big help.
Replaced drum but not all the way. Placed new belt on drum about 1/2 inch in front of groove. Flat side down, looped it over idle pulley and motor. Put drum in place. Replaced Front Guide's 2. Drilled out old rivet's 1/8" drill. Replaced front drum cover and 4 screw'. Replaced front of dryer and 2 screw's. The video showing how to do job was very helpful, watch it. PartSelect do a great job, I don't think I would have tried this job without their help. Dryer works like new.

UNPLUG THE UNIT First, I removed the 2 screws from bottom of the front panel. I removed the panel and disconnected the switch wires. Next, I removed the 4 bolts from the front tumbler support with a socket. I removed the tumbler, but left the belt inside. I cleaned up the inside as much as possible and removed both support rollers with a 1/2 in. straight wrench. (Save the nuts.) I removed the clips to reuse with the new shafts, attached the new washers and rollers, and resecured the shafts in place. Next reset the tumbler with the belt slacked over the back support. Let the tumbler rest on the blower pipe to allow slack to bring the belt over the tumbler and around the drive and idler wheel. Then, set tumbler back into rear seat and reattach front support and panel. I tested the unit before attaching the front panel. Works great!!

I watched the video on the web site, that helped a lot and made my repaires like the video showed.

Watched the repair video, went from there. My belt tensioner was different than what was shown on the video. That took a little more time to figure out how to reinstall. A picture is worth a thousand words when it comes to repairs! Thanks
