How to Fix a Door Strike for a Washer With Filling Issues

The door strike is a device that latches the washer door shut. If the door strike is defective, the washer’s door will not lock and the washer is unable to proceed with its wash cycles, thereby not filling up with water.

What is the Door Strike?

The door strike, also known as the catch or hook, is a rigid plastic part that allows your washer door to lock properly by activating the lid switch on top-load washers or the door-locking mechanism on front-load washers.

Where is the Door Strike?

It is typically located along your washer’s door frame.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Door Strike

  1. As with all repairs, begin by unplugging your washer. If you have a gas washer, shut off the gas supply and disconnect the gas lines.
  2. Additionally, be sure to turn off your hot and cold water supplies.
  3. Open your washer’s door/lid and locate the door strike.
  4. Loosen any screws attaching the door strike with a screwdriver.
  5. Inspect the door strike for cracks or damage.

How to Install a New Door Strike

  1. Align the new door strike with the slot the previous strike was removed from.
  2. Snap the door strike into place and rethread any screws to secure it.
