How to Fix a Trunnion for a Washer That is Shaking and Moving

An excessively moving and shaking washer can be caused by a problem with its spider-arm. Also known as the basket spider or trunnion, it’s a part that’s mounted to the tub of your washer and it’s susceptible to corrosion over time, which can lead to its arms breaking off and causing instability in the washer. This usually makes a loud noise, so if you’ve heard a loud noise coming from your washer and there is excessive shaking or moving, a broken spider-arm is likely the cause.

Just below we have a guide to help you through the entire diagnostic and repair process, so you can get back to washing in peace!

What is a Trunnion?

A trunnion, also known as a spider-arm is a component with three arms that are attached to the tub, the rotor, and the stator assembly of your washer. It balances the tub and the general assembly within your washer. If the spider-arm is broken or damaged, it can lead to instability and moving and shaking within your washer.

Where is the Trunnion Located?

The trunnion/spider-arm is normally located below or behind the tub within your washer. It is connected to and supports the rotor and stator assembly.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Trunnion

  1. You will need to disconnect the power and water supply to the washer and pull it out from the wall to access the back panel.
  2. Next, remove the back panel from the washer.
  3. Remove the bolt that holds the rotor in place and remove the rotor. Once the rotor is out of the way, you have access to the stator.
  4. You will need to remove the mounting bolts, the wire harness, and the rotor positioning sensor from the stator. Remove the stator or pulley then the outer tub halves need to be separated to access the spider-arm.
  5. Inspect the spider-arm for signs of corrosion and cracks. If present, the arm will need to be replaced so no further damage is done to your machine.

How to Install a New Trunnion

Replacing the spider-arm will require some tools and some time, so refer to your user manual and the Fix safety guide before you proceed, for any further instructional information. The following instructions and video should help you get on your way to making this advanced repair.

  1. Before replacing the spider arm, it is wise to also change the seal where the shaft goes through the outer tub.
  2. Place the new spider arm into its position on the base, locking it into position with the original bolts if they were salvageable.
  3. Remount the stator and the outer tub halves that were previously disconnected.
  4. Reconnect the bolts and the wire harness, followed by the rotor bolt.
  5. Connect the back panel to the washer, and your repair is complete!
