How to Fix a Suspension Spring for a Washer That is Shaking and Moving

If your washer is moving or shaking excessively when washing or spinning, it might be because of an issue with its suspension springs. These springs work with the plate and rods to form the overall suspension in your washer and are used to balance the inner tub during the washing and spinning cycles. If these springs are compromised in any way, it can lead to a slew of issues with your washer—mainly causing it to move or shake excessively under a full load.

Just below, though, is a straightforward guide to help you through the entire diagnostic and repair process! This repair may require some tools, some time, and some patience, but at the end of it you and your washer will both be thankful for your service!

What are Suspension Springs?

Suspension springs are a vital component of the suspension system inside your washer, and are used to control and reduce the amount of movement and vibration caused by your washer under a full load of washing and spinning cycles.

Where are the Suspension Springs Located?

Suspension springs are located at the base of the frame of your washer and are normally connected to each of the four corners of the appliance, or to the base frame of the appliance. For more assistance locating your washer’s suspension springs, refer to the 3D diagram below!

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Suspension Springs

  1. Disconnect the power and the water supply from your appliance before starting.
  2. Remove the top or front panel of the washing machine to gain access to the suspension springs.
  3. Inspect the springs for stretching or damage and ensure that they are securely attached at both ends. Use caution when replacing the springs as they are under tension. Always wear the proper protective clothing.
  4. If you find any signs of damage, stretching, or wear, you will need replacement suspension springs. We recommend that you replace all the suspension springs at the same time if any are determined to be defective as they wear out at the same rate.
  5. It is easiest to complete this repair with the washer tilted or completely on its back.
  6. Unscrew the suspension bracket to release the tension on the spring.
  7. Then attach the new spring and reinstall the bracket.
  8. After the bracket is installed, reinstall the top or front panel of your washer, and your repair is complete!

How to Install New Suspension Springs

Be aware that most machines will contain multiple suspension springs in different locations around the washer. Though you may only be experiencing issues with one spring, it is our recommendation that you locate and replace all suspension springs in your washer at the same time. They tend to wear at similar rates, and therefore replacing them all at once is an efficient way to prevent further repairs soon after replacing just one spring.

  1. On most machines,it makes sense to lubricate the spring hooks to increase their lifespan before installation.
  2. Attach one end of the spring to the machine, and the other to its housing, which may be a bracket that locks to the side of your machine.
  3. Repeat the process to change additional springs that your machine may have.
  4. Replace the top of the washer and your repair is complete.
