How to Fix a Shock Absorber for a Washer That is Shaking and Moving

Excessive shaking and moving from your washer might spell an issue with its shock absorbers. Shock absorbers reduce a great deal of movement caused by the washer during its cleaning cycle, and if broken or worn down will cause your washer to bang a lot more on the outer tub when spinning. You can normally identify the shock absorbers as the bad component if your washer is moving and shaking a lot, without any resistance. Other components can cause this, too, but as the shock absorbers are connected to the washer’s frame, the moving and shaking will likely be significant. Just below, though, is an easy to follow guide so you can diagnose this issue, and get your washer back to washing!

What is a Shock Absorber?

A shock absorber, or strut, is a rod-like object that’s used to moderate the amount of overall shaking that’s caused by the tub during a spin cycle. Without these absorbers in place, you would hear the tub banging on the outer frame of your washer.

Where are the Shock Absorbers Located?

The shock absorbers in your washer are located between the outer tub and the corners of the base frame. If you need help locating these absorbers, refer to the diagram below.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Shock Absorbers

  1. Start by disconnecting the power and water supply to your washer.
  2. Next remove the screws and remove the main control from the washer by tilting it backwards.
  3. Disengage the tabs and remove the cabinet from the washer to expose the tub.
  4. Use a rubber mallet to lightly tap on the clips that secure the balance ring. This should cause the clips to release, allowing you to remove the damaged balance ring.
  5. When installing the new balance ring, be sure to press down firmly so that the clips can engage with the washer tub

How to Install New Shock Absorbers

  1. Most shock absorbers are held in place by a nylon-type pin with a locking tab, while a few don't use pins, and instead just rely on you twisting the new shocks into place. For pin-type shocks, some manufacturers will supply the shock absorbers with new pins, some expect you to re-use the pins that are already in there. Either way, you will want to apply a little bit of lubricant to the pins before inserting or re-inserting them.
  2. Bring the shock down to its mount location (you may need to wiggle it into place to get it lined up).
  3. Insert a lubricated pin to lock the positioned shock absorber into place. Repeat for any other pins that your model has to lock the new shock into place.
  4. Replace the back cover of your washer, and your repair is complete!
