How to Fix a Counterweight for a Washer That is Shaking and Moving

If your washer is shaking or moving a lot during its washing and spinning cycles, there might be an issue with the counterweight. The counterweight is used to balance the weight of the inner-tub and keep the washer stable, reducing the vibrations that are caused by the tub during the spinning and washing cycles. Below is a step-by-step guide on how you can not only locate your washer’s counterweight, but diagnose it so you can get back to washing!

What is a Counterweight?

A washer counterweight is a weight, usually made of plastic or concrete, that balances your washer from the weight of the motor and inner tub(s) during the washing and spinning cycles. Without this counterweight, your washer will normally shake and move much more excessively during those cycles.

Where is the Counterweight Located?

The counterweight is usually fastened or screwed to the front or motor-opposite side of your washer, to counterbalance the weight of not only the motor but the tub as well. For further information related to the location of your model’s counterweight, refer to highlighted parts in the 3D diagrams below!

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Counterweight

Replacing the counterweight(s) on your washer is simpler than you may think, and will only require a few tools! We recommend that you follow the simple step-by-step guide that Chris and our video team made just below to show you exactly how to access and remove your counterweights!

  1. Remove the top of the washer and the console assembly, ensuring you keep track of any connections and fasteners that require removal along the way.
  2. Take the front portion off the washer next, again, ensuring you keep the fastening screws, clips, or other fasteners organized for reassembly later.
  3. With the front removed, the counterbalances will now be visible. It will be attached with bolts, which can be removed and the counterweight can be lifted out.
  4. Inspect the counterweight for signs of cracking and damage. If you notice that it has been damaged, it will need to be replaced.
