How to Fix a Door Latch Assembly for a Washer That Has Locking Issues

Here you can find information to help you determine if the cause of your washer not locking or unlocking is due to a problem with the door latch assembly. The door latch is vulnerable to both mechanical and electrical failure. The latch may be damaged or be out of place from continuous use and force.

What is a Door Latch Assembly?

The door latch detects whether the door on your washer is open, and the lock ensures that the lid stays shut while the washer is in use in order to prevent accidents or messes. If the door latch is defective, your washer may not lock, the load may not spin, and the washer may not drain. The washer may also not open/unlock at the end of a wash cycle.

Where is the Door Latch Assembly Located?

You can usually find the door latch on the opposite side from the door hinge, on the inside of the front panel around the door opening.

How to Access and Remove the Door Latch Assembly

  1. Unplug your washer and shut off the water valves.
  2. Open the door of your washer and locate the wire clamp behind the door boot, which holds the door boot in place. Remove the wire clamp to free the door boot.
  3. Pull the door boot away from the front panel, and then tuck it inside the opening of the machine for easy access.
  4. Locate the harness connector to the door latch on the right-hand side of the washing machine.
  5. Pull the harness connector down and off the door latch.
  6. Carefully remove the old door latch and check for a mechanical failure by examining it. If it is damaged, it needs to be replaced.

How to Install a New Door Latch Assembly

  1. Attach the new door latch to the harness connector until you hear the locking tab engage.
  2. Place the door latch back inside the machine and ensure that it is secured.
  3. Pull the door boot out from inside the machine, and then lay it flat around the edge of the front panel.
  4. Take the wire clamp and fit it around the door boot to hold it in place.
  5. Close the door, and plug your machine back in.
