How to Fix a Washer Drain Hose That is Leaking

If your washer is leaking from the back, the drain hose may be responsible. If the drain hose is clogged, torn, or loose, you may find water dripping from the rear of the washer. The drain hose can become loose or damaged if your washer is pushed too close to the wall, so make sure to check this first. This easy repair guide will give you step-by-step instructions on how to determine if the cause of your washer leaking is indeed the drain hose.

Once you have established the cause, you’ll be able to determine whether you can fix it or will need to replace it. You can easily fix a clogged drain hose by removing it from the machine and running high-pressure water through it. However, if the drain hose is torn then you will need a new one. We will show you how to install a replacement part and restore your washer to full working condition.

What is a Drain Hose?

The drain hose is a pipe that is responsible for carrying water out of the machine. It connects the washer to the existing drainage pipes in the building. After a wash cycle is complete, the drain pump, which is located at the base of the machine, directs the wastewater into the drain hose, which then moves it along into the sewer system or septic tank. If the drain hose isn’t securely installed in the drainpipe, it may cause it to leak during the spin cycle. The hose may also be clogged, which prevents water from flowing through the pipe, causing backups and overflow leaking onto the floor.

Where is the Drain Hose Located?

The drain hose is usually found at the rear of the washer.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Drain Hose in a Top Load Washing Machine

  1. Unplug your washer to prevent electrical accidents.
  2. Access your drain hose. This will depend on the type of washer you have.
  3. Once you have accessed it, you will find the drain hose attached to the drive pump, at the bottom of the tub.
  4. Use a pair of pliers to compress the spring clamp that holds the drain hose in place. Slide the clamp down and carefully detach the drain hose from the pump.
  5. Now, go to the back of the washer and remove the cover that secures the drain hose to the back of the cabinet.
  6. Pull the drain hose out through the back of the washer and check it for clogs or damage.
  7. If the hose is clogged, run some high-pressure water through it to push the clog out.
  8. If it is damaged, then you will need a new hose.

How to Install a New Drain Hose in a Top Load Washing Machine

  1. Follow the steps in “How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Drain Hose in a Top Load Washer” to remove the drain hose.

  3. Slide the new hose in through the rear of the machine, small end in first.
  4. Secure the drain hose to the back of the machine by reinstalling the back cover of the washer.
  5. At the front of the washer, push the end of the hose onto the pump and secure it in place with the spring clamp.
  6. Position the front panel back onto the machine and ensure that it is tightly secured.
  7. Fit the main top on and ensure that the spring clips engage.
  8. Plug your machine back in and your repair is done.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Drain Hose in a Front Load Washing Machine

  1. Shut off the power to your washing machine and move it away from the wall.
  2. Remove the back panel from the machine.
  3. Compress the spring clamp that holds the drain hose in place. Slide the clamp down and pull the drain hose from the pump.
  4. Remove the drain hose from the exterior of the machine.
  5. Inspect the drain hose for any clogs and kinks.
