The washer's agitator was making banging sounds because it was also kinda loose.
Upon inspection (lifting off agitator cap at the top). I then lifted off the Barrier Cap underneath it and found that its rubber seal (an O-Ring) was broken. So I ordered a new one which arrived VERY promptly. Going at it, I then held the Barrier Cap in my hand and stretched the new O-ring around its base. Then I placed the Cap down on th e cam beneath it and then turned the Cap, screwing it to the right until it was tight. Less than 60 seconds.
