Water was not pumping out of the dishwasher and there was a grinding sound
After trying to diagnose the problem (online searches to rule out clogs, identify grinding sounds, video about how to remove and install pump) I set out to install the new pump. Getting the washer out from the counter was a major hassle for a variety of reasons. The actual installation of the pump was SIMPLE. The key steps are: turn pow er off in your electric box for the circuit supplying the dishwasher, turn off (close) the water line serving the dishwasher, disconnect any water and electric lines from the dishwasher so you can move it out from under your countertop, gently rotate the dishwasher on its side so you can access the pump from the underside of the unit. The SIMPLE steps now are to unplug the two electric terminal connectors on the pump (plastic clips), loosen and remove clamp on the smaller drain tube as well as the clamp on the larger access tube for the dishwasher basin. Make sure you have a towel handy for water that will drain out of the system when you disconnect tubes. Remove screws that attach a support wire (not electrical) to a plastic wedge on the pump body. Install the new pump and reconnect at 4 points: small drain hose connection, larger tube connector to basin, screws connecting pump to support wire, 2 electrical terminal clips. Then reconnect power source and water source and slide the dishwasher back into place under the counter. Turn the water supply back on as well as the electric circuit serving the dishwasher. Run a partial cycle as a test.

noise and failure to drain
Dishwasher started making violent noise at certain parts of the cycle. After a few weeks, it stopped draining the tub. Found that the drain pump stopped working and the rubber sump had degraded. While the rubber circulation pump connector appeared to be ok, it didn't reseal after pump/sump installation and had to be replaced as well.
