Agitator was nice (not agitating)
Pulled off the top of the agitator (softener dispenser) the plug and the bolt holding the agitator on. Pulled the agitator out and removed the cup that held/holds the cogs. Found the broken plastic cogs. Got on the internet and hunted the parts. Found out they were called cogs and didn't have to order the entire machine to get them. Ordered and expected 5 days of dirty laundry.

The top part of the agitator would not agitate
So simple it was amazing.....popped off the fabric softner dispenser, popped out the cap, with a wrench unscrewed the bolt holding the agitator in place, took out the agitator, popped off the top portion, replaced the agitator directional cogs, and in reverse order reinstalled the agitator. Works like a charm and cost less than $10. Amazing. The video was very helpful!

Washing Machine would not agitate
There are 4 cogs that are in contact with a gear which slips in one direction and catches in the other direction as the agitator oscillates back and forth. Two of the cogs were broken and the agitator would no longer turn thus the cloths would not circulate properly through the wash and rinse cycles. The cogs (dogs), by some manufacture’s name, cost $3.83 and just over 10 dollars total including S&H.
There is also an excellent video on the PartSelect site which shows exactly how to remove the agitator, dismantle and then reassemble it. The cogs were simple to replace.
I would not have had the slightest idea how to do this without the video. My first thoughts, when I saw that the agitator wasn't working were A:Oh no I'm going to need to tear the washing machine completely apart to fix the problem or B:Replace the whole washing machine.....I'm sure there are many folks who would have just given up and used plan B. This is a great Website! I'm sure I'll be back here for other household repairs.

The agitator of our clothes washer stopped working
I followed the video on the PartSelect web site and replaced the agitator directional cogs. The only problem I had was figuring out how to remove the cover over the cogs. I finally drilled the four "melted" plastic fasteners off and the the problem was solved. The washing machine is now working as if new!

Upper agitator stopped moving and spin cycle did not work properly
Once I saw that the upper agitator was not moving, I went online and researched the problem. I learned about the four "dogs" that move the agitator. After verifying that the lower agitator worked as it should, I ordered the set of "dogs" and installed them in less than 30 minutes. Shipping was super fast on these small parts, and the price was definitely better than a repair service call!

upper agitator was not working.
Snap off the plastic cap at the top of the agitator. You will see what to do next. You have worn directional cogs. Some refer to them as dogs. Clever engineering.

agitator wasn't working right. Was not catching like it should.
Remove cap on top of agitator with screw driver or other thin edged tool. It pries off. You will see a cap down inside the agitator tube. Pull out that cap with fingers or pliers. You will see a nut under it. Use ratchet with extender to reach it and unscrew turning counter clock wise. after it is unscrewed, pull the agitator straight up and out of machine. Then you will have to pull the top part of agitator from the bottom part to separate the two pieces of the aitator. Then remove the dogs ( little catches in the one piece) . Replace them into the slots with the new ones and carefully put the two pieces of the agitator back together. Put agitator back into machine and tighten the bolt, snap the cap back on and you are back in business.
