1105072011 Kenmore Washer - Instructions

Repair was simple and quick. Started by removing softener cup and removed bolt holding part that housed dogs. Removed housing and slipped of hold down clamp and replaced the 4 dogs then reversed procedure all took about 8 mins

Pop the top off the agitator, remove the bolt, pull off the agitator, pull out the part holding the cogs (dog ears),remove and replace cogs, reassemble. Works great now.

from start to finish was about 10 minutes. used screwdriver to pop off top cap of agitator. used ratchet with small extension to take out bolt for agitator. removed agitator, placed it on ground for leverage and pulled off top agitator. carefully observed old directional cogs. flipped top agitator upside down removed old worn out/ broken plastic cogs. replaced them with the new ones. hard to screw up they only install one way. kept top agitator upside down and put rest of agitator back on. flipped it right side up and pressed down hard for secure fit. placed agitator back in washer. reinstalled bolt. placed cap back on and was finished...25 year old washer working like new. $2.80 not including shipping...

I shut the machine off and came to the site . I got the impression that it could have been several things. I made the wash and rinse very brief to minimize further damage. My clothes didn't get clean. I just had to pop the hubcap and remove a 7/16 hex head screw to see there was no damage but broken dogs. I hadn't needed to abort the wash. I think they've been broken 15 years but didn't happen to make noise before. if the top piece of the agitator were called the circulator, I would have figured it out years ago. On full loads, clothes didn't circulate very well and tended to come out with deposits of lint. I think friction from a coating of soap scum kept the circulator moving enough to fool me, but it wasn't doing its job. I heated baking soda in water on the stove to make washing soda. I soaked the parts to remove soap scum, paying special attention to the ring of cogs that the dogs would engage. I replaced the thrust spacer because it was cracked. I didn't feel any grease or see any wear, so I think the only function for grease would be to prevent squeaks. Now, with a full load, clothes and water circulate better than I remember.

I followed a repair video on YouTube It is easier to disassemble the agitator and replace to cogs The hard part was placing the top part of the agitator back onto the bottom parts, after I replaced the cogs. i use a flashlight to help see where the two separate pieces of the agitator need to be to connect the back together properly ( top agitator & bottom agitator). Once this sep is completed you have to place the whole agitator and line it up on the agitator rod. Line up the groves as much as possible. Turn the agitator slowly until it slides into place. Then use your socket wrench to tighten the screw. The screw is the last step to attach the agitator back onto the washing machine. Then replace the cap, to keep water from going down into the washing machine. Then replace the fabric softener dispenser. Now you have a great washing machine. I am a women and did this repair by myself.

THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE ON THE SAME SITE AS YOUR PART WHITCH MADE IT SIMPLE

After reading on line how others did it, it was simple. I lifted out the softener dispenser. Under that there was a plastic cap. You just lift it out - theres no fasteners holding it. It just fits snugly in place by means of an o-ring. Under that there is one bolt holding the agitator to the spindle. Loosen that and remove the whole agitator. The agitator then comes apart in the middle. Just pull the two halves apart. The only tool you will need is one socket with a long extention and a ratchet. Once apart you will see the 4 plastic cogs that spin the agitator. The teeth were worn off of mine. I simply replaced the four cogs that come as a set. None of the other parts were worn to the point of needing replacement. I now have a fully functioning washing machine that was repaired for less than thirteen dollars!

We ordered the dog Agit clutch and within a few minutes I had a new washer. It started agitating a lot faster.

Removed the four worn agitator directional cogs and replaced them with new ones

Followed youtube video. Great instruction.

Gently pry top of agitator off with small flat-blade screwdriver. Using the square end of a 1/2-inch socket extension, unscrew the plastic center "nut." Lift agitator off, remove center cone that holds the dogs, slip the retainer ring off, remove the worn dogs and replace. (Great opportunity clean the soap scum off the agitator!) Reverse the process to complete the repair.

I unscrewed the top cap by hand and used a socket wrench to remove the main center unit.
the rest was very straight forward.

The repair went smoothy except for removing the screw that holds the upper agitator part from the bottom agitator. Once that was removed all went smoothly. Considering my washer is 17years old, I guess I should be happy that was my only problem. I followed the directions of the repairman in the video that was provided by the web site. Most of my parts matched his parts :). My husband was very proud that I repaired the washer and was able to diagnose the problem. Thanks for helping me save some $$$$. Could be done in place, but it's easier to pull the full agitator assembly out first, and work at a table. Remove the fabric softener dispenser, then the plastic cap below (with rubber o-ring)- both pull out by hand. Reverse the now visible bolt with an extended 7/16" socket and pull the cog housing up and out, gripping with gentle pressure with pliers ( locking plastic tabs make this piece impossible to remove by hand). Once the housing is removed it's easy to separate the two halves with your fingernails and replace the cogs. I was able to reassemble everything and push it back down into the drum in about two minutes. Piece of cake- I highly recommend anyone with a tool box do this himself.

With the help of a You Tube video, which was watched first, then when the parts were delivered, the video was watched again, then we played the video back and paused it after each section was done so we could make sure we were doing the repair correct. The one thing I will mention that the video doesn't mention to do is, before taking the agitator out of the washer, put a mark somewhere on the agitator to tell you which end is the top. Just remember that the top( cap ) will be off, so that will not work. Otherwise it was a good, easy fix
