my heater sets a E1 code, with the top shell cover removed it runs fine.

Hello Tim, thank you for your question. E 1 code can be due to clogged filter or a tripped tilt switch. Unplug unit, turn onto side, then back upright again and plug in. Clean or replace the filter PS10424443. Good luck with your repair.
