How to Fix a Drive Lug for a Washer That Has Spinning Issues

If your washer is experiencing issues with spinning, the drive block may be the cause. The lug keeps the basket stable during the spin cycle. If it is worn down, your washer may not spin properly or at all.

What is a Drive Lug?

The drive block in your washer, also known as a drive lug, helps to rotate the basket during the spin cycle. If this part has become worn, the basket may become unstable inside your washer, and may no longer spin.

Where is the Drive Lug Located?

The drive block is located on the drive shaft, underneath the inner tub basket.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect a Drive Lug

  1. To access the drive block, you need to remove the outer cabinet, the agitator, and the inner tub basket from your washer. This can involve some heavy lifting and may require another person to help you.
  2. Once you have removed these components and have access to the drive block, you can then use a hammer to tap the drive block loose from the drive shaft.

How to Test a Drive Lug

If your drive lug is worn-out or damaged upon inspection, it will need to be replaced.

How to Install a New Washer Drive Lug

  1. Line up the slots on the new drive block with the tabs on the drive shaft and tap into place.
  2. You can now reassemble your washing machine.
