How to Fix a Drain Hose for a Washer That Has Spinning Issues

Below you will find information to help you determine if the cause of your top-load washer not spinning is a problem with the drain hose. A common reason your washer is not spinning may be the drain hose because the drain hose moves water out of the washer during the rinse and wash cycles. Alternatively, if the machine is full of water and unable to drain, the washer also will not be able to spin. The good news is that this is an easy fix! We have prepared this expert guide to show you how you can find the drain hose, remove it, and clean it out. If the hose is no longer usable, we will show you how to install a new one and get your washer spinning again in no time.

What is a Drain Hose?

The purpose of the drain hose is to move the water out of your washer and into the drain. If your drain hose has been attached to the standpipe with a clamp, it can cause a suction effect that results in the machine emptying the water as it’s also filling. If there is no water in the washer, the agitate cycle will not be able to start, and if the machine doesn’t agitate then it won’t move through to the spin cycle. Alternatively, if the machine is full of water and unable to drain, the washer will not be able to spin, either.

Where is the Drain Hose Located?

The drain hose is located at the lower back of the washer.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Drain Hose

  1. The drain hose is located at the lower back of the washer, so you just need to make the back of the washer accessible in order to remove the old hose.
  2. Some washers will have a spring clamp that needs to be removed from where the hose connects to the washer, which you can remove with a set of pliers.
  3. Simply just grip the hose and pull it out of the machine. (Have a container or towel ready to catch in water that may still be in the line.)
  4. Inspect the hose for cracks or other abrasions.
