How to Fix the Push-to-Start Switch for a Dryer That Will Not Start

If your dryer won’t start, there’s a chance it may be because of an issue with its push-to-start switch. For some dryers, a push-to-start switch is used to start the cycle on your dryer, and if it malfunctions or doesn’t work properly, it can cause your dryer not to start at all because the circuit that is usually completed by the switch cannot be completed. We've put together an expert-curated guide to the push-to-start switch that can help you diagnose, remove, inspect, and re-install this part so that you can determine if it’s the culprit for your dryer not starting.

What is a Push-to-Start Switch?

A push-to-start switch is a switch within the start button of your dryer that creates a completed circuit with the motor once it’s pushed in, prompting the start of the dryer cycle. Depending on your dryer’s model specifications, this switch can vary in appearance and function.

Where is the Push-to-Start Switch Located?

Most likely, the push-to-start switch will be mounted on the console as a separate switch or may be part of the touch-pad on an electric variant dryer. This location may be either near the rear or the front of your machine, depending on your model. Refer to the 3D rendering for a visual reference to locate the switch, but keep in mind that your user manual will provide the most accurate location for your specific model.

FIX TIP

FIX TIP

Before you begin the repair process, it’s recommended that you shut off your dryer and that you remove your dryer’s lint screen.
  1. First, locate your user-interface panel, which is usually on top of the machine, either at the rear of the machine, or at the front.
  2. Using the appropriate socket-head, screwdriver, or putty knife, unfasten the user-interface from the cabinet. This may require you to remove the top panel of your machine.
  3. Referring to the front of the user-interface panel, locate the push-to-start switch mechanism that lies behind the user-interface.
  4. Disconnect any wire or cable harnesses that are connected to the switch and unscrew if necessary.

How to Test a Push-to-Start Switch

  1. Set your multimeter to continuity mode.
  2. Touch the two probes to the two terminals on your push-to-start switch.
  3. If there is no visual or audible indication of continuity, the switch will need to be replaced.

How to Install a New Push-to-Start Switch

  1. Taking the new switch in hand, first connect it to the terminals or cable/wire harness before inserting it and fastening it to the dryer user-interface panel.
  2. Re-secure the user-interface panel to the dryer cabinet and reassemble the rest of the cabinet if you previously disconnected the top or front panel to access the user-interface panel.
  3. Reinsert the lint filter if previously removed. Your repair is now complete!
