Maytag washer stopped spinning but pumps the water out. How do I resolve this problem
For model number MAV6548AWW
Fix.com logo
Hello Barry, Thank you for the question. The most common issues is a worn or broken Belt. We suggest checking the Belt first to verify it is intact. If the Belt is good, you can check the Transmission Pulley and Bearing Kit for wear or damage. We hope this helps!

Washer would run and agitate but would not spin.
Prior to the spin cycle not working, the washer would make a loud screeching noise when the spin cycle would stop. I wasn't sure if there was a problem with the break rotor or some bearing was out. Due to the washer's age, I decided to go ahead and replace the pulley, brake rotor, motor pivot spring and snubber ring components.
I be gan by unplugging the unit first, securing the lid with duct tape and laying the washer on its front face. I removed the belt and transmission pulley per instructions contained in the replacement kit. Mainly consists of popping the "E" ring off with a screwdriver. Once the pulley was off, I stood the washer upright and to access and remove tub. Having the tub out made it easier to compress the brake spring when re-attaching the brake stator. Removing the tub is easy, I just popped off the tub cover and tilted the tub around to ease the tension and remove the bottom springs with pliers (this may require an assistant). With the tub removed, I turned it over to remove the brake stator. USE CAUTION WHEN REMOVING THE BRAKE STATOR. A 200 LB BRAKE SPRING IS UNDER IT AND IS UNDER TENSION. With the new brake rotor and brake stator secured, I replaced the snubber ring and motor pivot spring. I put it all back together in reverse order and it spun like a top, is quieter and stops on a dime!

The washer was jumping all over during spin cycles
The most difficult thing to do was to install the springs. I removed the sides and back, which made it much easier. Otherwise, I followed the instructions which were provided by others on the site.

Washer making ratcheting sound when agitating.
Taking it apart was easy. I found that the new parts did not allow the slip ring that came with the new kit to fit the shaft even with the thinner washer. The new slip ring seemed to be thicker than the old one. I ended up using the old large pulley, the old cam and the old slip ring and thin washer to get it to fit. It did solve the nois e problem.

Spring tension on drum.
This spring have so much tension they cannot be removed with one hand like the indicate in the video. Tube must be wedged towards the spring trying to be removed. Vise grips must be attached to the lower part of the spring not the upper and pry bar is needed to pry spring loose from base of unit. Be careful nothing slips where prying, there is a lot of tension on the springs.

Wash shakes and moves during spin cycle
The on-line video from this site was extremely helpful! It showed me almost exactly what to do. The only difference was that my washer did not have an access panel in the back of it like the one in the video. I had to remove the skin "shell" of the washer to get around to the back of the tub unit. It wasn't too hard and the entire rep air was done in about 2 hours. This was the first time I've ever attempted a repair like this so I'm sure that added to my repair time.

Machine was noisy during wash cycle and had teh infamous finger on wet glass screach.
After watching the online video and info I decided to tackle the repair from the bottom of the machine, tilted against the wall. I removed the lower pulley and belt then rotated out the # 10 screws with the 2 inch ones to relieve the brake rotor spring tension. The brake stator came off easily, with the spring and brake rotor to follow. S ince the tub rests on the Snubber Ring, it is not possible to change it out from the bottom. From my visual inspection the snubber ring appeared intact, so left the old one in place. I installed the new Brake Rotor and Stator and put the lower pulley and belt back on. Tested the machine and it ran smooth as new.
