The durable plastic housing fits onto the bottom of the main tube and is used to cover the motor and to mount the spindle and guard. The motor housing is sold as an individual replacement part.

Motor housing had melted / warped and no longer held the lower bearing in place. That let the plastic gear strip away
Removed the grass shield and edging guide, split the motor cover by removing the screws, removed the electrical wire hold down bracket, removed the motor assembly, then reinstalled all components, including a new hub, into the new motor case.
Bearings were a tight fit in the new case.

The availability of this part saved my little weed eater. Bearing seized up and spun in the housing and pretty much ruined it. This part fixed me right up.
Easy installation too.
I think I'll clean the wet grass off of the weed eater after use to maybe preserve the lower bearing this time.
