Carbon brushes work to transfer electrical current to the armature inside the motor of your power tool. These parts are in constant contact with the spinning armature, the friction and heat they experience during operation is what leads to the brushes wearing down. When this happens you might notice your sander polisher has intermittent motor function, or the motor might have reduced power.
