O-rings are made to contain thousands of PSI pressure by creating a seal between two or more parts. O-ring measurements are defined by the inside diameter and the thickness. There are many causes for O-Ring failure. The most common among power tools are: • Extrusion and Nibbling - The O-ring has ragged, tattered edges. These are commonly caused by pressure spikes which shear off tiny "bites" from the o-ring, or caused by clearance gaps. • Abrasion - One or both sides of the o-ring appear rough and slightly flattened. Commonly caused by a contact surface that is too rough, contains grit or is too smooth to allow lubrication. • Over Compression - The O-ring is flattened on both sides and may have a "ring" split along its length. Commonly caused by excessive pressure or heat. • Heat Hardening - The O-ring has a pitted or cracked surface, and is often flattened on both sides. Caused by temperature exceeding o-ring capacity. • Weather/Ozone Cracking - The O-ring is covered in small surface cracks. Caused by exposure to ozone, UV rays and air pollution. Excessive seal stretching (greater that 5%) causes similar cracking.

This is a brush spring and it is used in a variety of power tools. The spring applies force to the motor brush inside the motor. This will keep the brush tight along the armature. If the brush has worn down it will create heat, and the spring will lose tension. If this happens, both parts will have to be replaced.

This is an OEM random orbit belt, also known as a clutch belt. This part is the mechanism that stops the pad from continuing to spin once it has been removed from the surface you are working on. If this belt is busted, the pad will spin uncontrollably when removed from your work piece. When the pads are turning fast like this, it could easily damage the wood you are working on. Removing the sanding pad and replacing this belt is a novice repair that should only take a few minutes to complete.

151281-08
The 151281-08 Pad is used to hold 5 inch Hook and Loop sandpaper with 8 vacuum holes. Over the past few years the popularity of Hook and Loop paper has grown because of the ease of changing sandpaper when needed. Over that of the PSA (Pressure Sensitive Sandpaper) Applying too much pressure on the sander may cause premature wear on the Hook and Loop pad. When a pad needs to be replaced, simply remove the three screws that hold the pad to the sander, then replace it with a new pad.
