The metering side of your carburetor is a self adjusting vacuum based system, the diaphragm moves depending on the amount of fuel being pulled into the motor. At higher speeds more fuel is being pulled into the engine, the diaphragm compresses and the pin in the center of the diaphragm pushes on the metering lever, which lifts the regulator inlet needle and allows more fuel to travel from the pump into the reservoir. This is why it is important to ensure your metering diaphragm is in good shape, it is a very important part of the fuel regulator assembly on your carburetor, which ensures your engine is getting the appropriate amount of fuel to run smoothly.
