Top part of agitator broke loose and moved up and down.
Loosened set screw that held agitator assembly to shaft. Pulled assembly off. Place new assembly onto shaft, tightened set screw. Done. Less than five minuets.

agitator would not work well on washer, would spin occasionally
I decided to replace the belts on this machine since it was 17 years old. So I did that first, then I loosened the screw at the base of the agitator and lifted it off. I noticed the two mesh filters underneath the agitator base. They were filled with hard water and lint type material. It was all gummed up. I used CLR and a screw driv er to scrape it off. I could have ordered new mesh filters but I just cleaned them instead. It took a while since they were so bad. Then the new agitator just slipped on and I placed the new screw in. Job was done.

Washing machine agitator would spin freely, wouldn't agitate
The old agitator would just spin freely on the spindle; we kept lifting it out and trying to re-seat it, but something inside was broken and rattling. I watched a brief youtube video that showed how to disconnect the whole piece with a socket wrench on the central spindle, but it turned out that ours was held on only by a tiny nut at the bottom side of the spindle. It took only a minute to unscrew the nut with a nut wrench, lift out the whole agitator, and replace it with the new one -- I'm amazed it was that simple, but it has been working fine all week!
