Old breather tube fit loose, allowing extra air into the mixture and causing erratic running.
One end of the breather tube connects to the back of the air filter housing (the end that gets stretched, cracked, and loose) and the other end slips into the engine about an inch. That end is behind the fuel tank. On the 2 I have replaced, I didn't have to disconnect the fuel line, but the carburetor did have to be moved around.
Pr ep. Keep things clean as you go so you don't get grass clippings and dirt into the intake or fuel system. Empty the fuel tank, or have as little in it as possible.
1- Remove the air filter.
2- Remove the air filter housing - 4 screws, 2 different sized heads. This will disconnect the breather tube on this end of it.
3- The carburetor is loose, will come off, and needs to be moved some to replace the tube. Be careful to not lose the gaskets. The linkage usually doesn't need to be disconnected, nor does the fuel line.
4- Remove (disconnect and move to the side out of the way of the fuel tank) the cowling from the top of the engine that covers the fan impeller and crank mechanism. There are 3 to 4 screws, 1 is hidden under the label at the front of the cowling and there is usually a tab that clips under a frame piece.
5- Remove the fuel tank. There are several tabs on the bracket that clip over the mount on the fuel tank, and you will need to pry them slightly to get the tank to move. Remove it and set it on the mower deck.
6- Pull the breather tube out of the engine block. It is a tapered hole and should come out fairly easy.
7- Insert the long, tapered end of the new tube into the engine block.
8- Reverse the order of the previous steps. The fuel tanks should snap back in well with a little pressure, but make sure all of the tabs are firmly seated or it will cause problems installing the cowling. The cowling can be a little tricky to get fit down on the front. Again, make sure things are clean, particularly around the carburetor, and that you have all of the gaskets on the carb as you reinstall it.
