O-ring on my under-the-sink water filter had broken
I simply replaced the old O-ring; rubbed a bit of petroleum jelly around the seal and rescrewed the filter cannister back in place. It was easy, and worked like a charm!

water filter cartridge over a year old, needed changing
With this whole house water filter in line with the water heater line, I could see the filter was dirty because of the clear water filter housing and the original filter was white. I used a manufacturer supplied spanner wrench and turned off the water first, then unscrewed the filter housing and replaced with the new white filter cartridge, then re-installed the cartridge housing. The old one was visibly full of dirt because it was nearly black with sediment. I like the original equipment cartridge because it is white, other charcoal filters are black so you can't tell when they are full of dirt.
