Agitator not working. Spins freely, not supposed to.
Unplug power. Pull up firmly and quickly from the base of the agitator. Some videos used a rope and 2x4, I didn't have to. The agitator just pops right off. Then with a 7/16" wrench unscrew the bolt while holding on to the coupling. Take agitator coupling off. Clean off metal grooves that the coupling goes on, use either a small screwdriver, metal brush, a knowl, just to make sure you will have good connection with the new coupling. Then install the coupling, new nut, tighten nut firmly. Install agitator pushing down firmly on opposite sides until snaps in place. Turn agitator by hand, it should not free spin. Plug power back in, run washer with water and bleach only in the smallest setting and let it run through its cycle. This will take care of any black debris that might have got into the bowl while fixing. GOOD LUCK!! I also used videos found on Google.

The gear agitator had striped. Wouldn't spin the blades to wash the clothes.
I pulled up on the fin part of the agitator exposing the gear coupling. I unbolted the nut on top with a 12 mm socket. Once the nut and washer were removed I pulled up on the gear coupling and slid it right off. Reversed procedures to install the new one.

The clothes have been dingy for quite some time.
I noticed the agitator would spin all the way around, in each direction. Also, the machine would make no sound, associated with washing, during that part of the cycle. I pulled the fabric softener reservoir off, with fingers on each side of the agitator, i pulled straight up and that gives you access to the coupling. Use a 7/16'" socket to loosen the nut, remove it and pull the coupling off. Press the new coupling on the splined shaft, tighten nut, and line up agitator with the grooves, push it down and replace fabric reservoir. Straightforward repair.

My washer did not agitate. It would spin and the motor sounded like it was agitating.
I pulled the top of the agitator off (the softener dispenser) then pulled the agitator itself off. I had to pull with some force. I used the socket wrench to remove the bolt on top of the agitator coupling. I then pulled off the old agitator coupling, replaced it with the new part. Used the socket wrench to tighten the new bolt. Lined up the slots on the new coupling with the agitator top, it slid on with a little resistance. The last part to replace was the softener dispencer.

agitator stopped agitating
There are many on-line videos to help you do this. It's so easy, even a beginner handyperson can do it. For this model, just run a strap under the agitator to assist you in lifting it up off the coupler (good tug). Remove the old worn coupler, put the new one on, set the agitator back on by giving it a little downward push.

Wouldn't agitate.
Took the front panel off and it looked like everything was OK with the transmission, etc. Pulled out the agitator and noticed that the coupler had stripped out splines. New coupler was a later design, but was backward compatible with the new bolt included. Spline slipped on with no problem and hold down bolt snugged down just fine. Snapped the agitator back on and was in business.

you can hear the motor running, but it sounds different when the agitator's not moving.
at 1st, i call GE for service, but i have to wait for the next available field service engineer which is 7 to 8 days to come to my place to check on the washer. the cost is $99.00(non refundable) and then he will order the parts needed for repair another 2 to 3 days. then i decided to buy the parts myself online, and google the web on "how to fix the washer that stopped agitating" everythings in there, with video instruction. pull the agitator up and out by grabbing on to its base. inside, the knot was corroded and the o ring worn out,but really easy to remove with the 11mm socket. the coupling kit although looks different, fit perfectly. insert says its an upgrade of the old model. toss the old and replace with the new, no sweat! now it's shaking like crazy.

agitator was not agitating
The agitator is the tough thing to remove, I took a previous posters advice and used a rope and 2 boards to pull it up. I will describe it as many short ropes but it can be done without cutting the rope if you think a lot about it. loop the a rope under the agitator so its under 1/2, loop another rope under the other side. tie both loops so you can slide a board in each across the top of the washer. Then tie the 2 loops together on 2 sides down near the bottom of the agitator otherwise they will come out from under it when you pull. then slide the boards in the loops and lift up pulling up the agitator. That is the hard part. Remove the bolt on the coupling, and pull it off. The new one had to be lightly hammered on with a rubber mallet, then use the new bolt. the Agitator slide down and with a push down it popped on. Putting the new part on only took 15 min, removing the broken one took about 45 min. Washer is woking great now ! Saved over $100 or buying a new washer !

The agitator was not moving
First I had no idea what to do. My first thought was to buy a new washing machine and so I began searching and found that a washer equal to mine was over $600. I brewed on this for a few days when a neighbor told me that they are not that hard to work on and we should take it apart and look at it first. We took the top and the front of the washer off and looked at the belt and the motor. All seemed fine. (we just used a screwdriver for that) then we took the agitator off, it pulled right off with some heavy tugging. then we saw the coupling. It was only held on by one screw. We used a socket to take the screw out and pulled the coupling off. It is supposed to fit very tightly on a shaft with gears. When we pulled it off and looked inside it, all the plastic gears in the coupling were stripped and that is why the agitator would not move. I expected this to cost me at least $50, but to my surprise the part was only $6.50. The shipping cost more than the part. When it arrived in about 3 days. I literally had the part on and the washer back together in less than 5 minutes. The entire repair cost me $14 and now the washing machine works better than it has worked in years. Who knew. If you intimidated by working on washers, don't be, they really are very simple machines and so not worth calling a repair man for.

Washer was not running
Found out the screw was stripped from the agitator, probably because the washer is over 10 yrs old. We got the right part! The parts store was very fast in shipping, in fact we got it the next day! Highly recommend PartSelect!!!!!!!!!!
