PSI23SGMBKBS General Electric Refrigerator - Instructions

First I unplug solenoid from board. I then removed 3 screws holding it in place. I removed bad solenoid (it was very apparent once I took it out). I placed the new solenoid in place, replaced the 3 screws and plug the cord into the circuit board. Success!

I followed the easy video online that was mentioned in the paperwork that came with the part. The day before I replaced the flapper door for the ice chute and when I saw the rusted solenoid I immediately ordered that part which arrived the next day. I did not need to remove the border around the water/ice dispenser access area as shown in the video to install the parts. I did use a tiny screwdriver to press the little tabs on either side at the bottom of the front panel to release it to get to the parts. I was able to remove and replace the solenoid within minutes. And this was my first ever appliance repair attempt!

Using a small phillips I removed the plastic module containing the ice/water selection buttons by sequentially inserting the screwdriver into 3 holes just underneath the module in the chute opening and pushing up on the tabs while pulling out on the module. Pulling the module away exposes 4 screws that are easily removed allowing you to remove the chute assembly. The solenoid is removed by removing 3 screws and pulling the clip containing the solenoid wires off the electronics board. Reverse the process to replace.

Changed out solenoid and plunger (comes as a kit). Repair was really easy and saved an expensive service call. Note: it is probably a good idea to get screws to go with the solenoid assy (qty 3) plus the screws that hold the dispenser plate to the door (qty 4). Mine were rusty due to the normally moist environment and had rusted, making their extraction more difficult than it had to be.

I watched the video on this site and read the comments here. Everything went as stated. I simply removed the front cover from the door, carefully pushing in the two plastic dimples to release the plastic piece. I used a very small screwdriver to get in the holes and pushed carefully while gently prying on the piece. It popped right out. I then carefully removed the three wire harnesses from the back of the cover. I then removed the four phillips screws that hold the cup pushing assembly on. I found this piece to be rather dirty/black moldy. I spent more time cleaning this with a toothbrush and soaking it than I did with the total repair of the solenoid, but I have much better piece of mind. I could now reach the solenoid, on the upper right hand corner. I removed the three screws and the solenoid was left hanging by the rusted top hook. I gently wiggled it off of the plastic arm that operates the flapper door. The new solenoid comes with the clip able to move freely and with no rust. Install the new solenoid in the same place and place the top hook onto the arm for the flapper door. Note, I WD40ed the screws and filed some of the rust off of the heads. I suggest ordering screws, like everybody says. But you can clean them up. I did this just in case I need to do this install again. The rest is just a matter of buttoning up everything. It is easy, don´t be intimidated. Anybody can do it, if you are the least bit handy and patient.

I was this close to calling a repair man when I stumbled upon this site. I would not have been able to attempt this relatively easy repair has I not seen the posts from people with the same problem. It was simple to pop off the cover and replace the selenoid using only about 8 screws total. Thanks to posts by other DIY'rs it was an easy job--this site is Great!

1. Unplug the fridge
2. Removed the outer facing of the dispenser outside the freezer door. This is fairly easy, better with a tool (plastic scraper) that won't mar the finish.
3. Removed the plastic plate with labels -- water, ice, etc. This is done by sliding a small jewelers screwdriver into the slots on the left, middle and right in back of the plate. These are difficult to see without a flashlight.
4. Removed the four screws in the panel behind this plate.
5. Unpluged the large cable on the left side after the panel is freed.
5. Removed the rubber "dispenser" button. this just pulls off.
6. Remove the panel
7. Lift flapper up and remove. Clips hold this in.
8. Put new flapper in place.
9. Use reverse order to put back together.
Piece of cake. Ice maker no longer frosts up.!!!!

Before starting my repairs I checked for part suppliers online. Partselect was one of the first I saw. They also had instruction videos. After watching the video, I took apart the ice maker and found the solenoid had rusted. I replaced the solenoid and while everything was apart I replaced the crank, spring and the flapper. The entire process only took about 20 minutes and that was only because of their informative videos.

I removed the face plate (ice/water, selection panel) from the freezer door to access and remove the solenoid which was badly rusted and replaced with a new one, and a new spring too. Very simple repair for a chronic pain.

Removed controls face plate by inserting small screw driver into small holes located below the face plate releasing internal fastening catches and permits you to pull the face plate down and out toward you. Remove the electronic panel now exposed covering the solenoid by removing the 4 screws in the corners. Detach the electrical connector leading from the solenoid ( It may be prudent to unplug the refrigerator as a safety proceedure). Proceed to remove 2 screws holding the solinoid. If the sollinoid is corroded and difficult to remove and disengage from flap(door) controling the ice shaft aperture, it may be necessary to remove the flap by removing 2 small screws holding it in place. Be careful to note the small spring on the left hand side of the shaft which the flap rotates around since it to be re installed in the proper position when the parts are reassembled since it closes the flap after it is opened by the solonoid.
Reconnect the parts and and snap face plate back into place. Good Luck

Removed dispensor cover and circuit board and replaced them. Ice will dispense and lights on inside work but the water dispensor still will not give water. May need dispensor cover.

1-Duct taped around the rectangular grid on the face of the door.2-Usinng a putty knife I removed the frame(just held with small plastic grommits3-The front panel with buttons for water/ice etc---push up and remove.4-Did not unplug the refrigerator until after this item was lifted up and I duct taped it to the refrigerator door to keep it out of the way.5-Once taped out of the way I unplugged from electrical.(***there was no need to unclip the small connectors to this panel----less likely to break the prongs if the above is followed)6-2-3 screws removed the solenoid which in my case was my problem(((Solenoid was completely destroyed by the amount of rust that it exhibited. ******If you have to replace flapper and or it and the spring-----this doesn't look very difficult either. Just keep the doors shut while electric out. I'm handy but not an expert on anything---doing it was easier than what I expected. Should take no more than 1-2 hours

Removed ice dispenser trim from bottom-up and then removed control panel by gently pulling up from the bottom. Removed four screws holding dispenser chute and then two screws holing flapper assembly. Replaced gnarly old flapper with a new one and put all removed pieces back together.

Remove dispenser assembly in freezer door & replace solenoid.

order the flopper, spring and racker can`t replace them; becouse factory recall back on 2003 most replace two ft. door of refrigerator. for $400.00
