RF387PXWW2 Whirlpool Range - Instructions

We have had our Whirlpool oven for 22 years and became very concerned that a part would not be available. We were thrilled to find the part as well as install the new part ourselves. With a screw driver, we disconnected the old baking element ( be sure to shut the power while doing this) and screwed in the new one. That simple!!!

The hardest part was figuring which breaker controlled the oven because it wasn't marked in my breaker box (it IS now!). So, first I killed all power to the stove, then unscrewed the 2 screws in the back of the oven holding the element. Pulled the element forward, then dissconnected the 2 clampy connector wires (yes, I'm a girl, no correct electrical jargon here). These were a little difficult because my oven is 21 years old & this is the first replacement I've had to do. I reconnected the new element clamps(which was easier), pushed the wires back through the opening & reinserted the screws. Threw the breaker back on, turned on oven to 200 degrees & let heat until the set temperature light turned off as a test. Voila - oven fixed!

First, I removed the oven door by pulling it open to where it loocked and then I pulled it up and off the hinges. Second, I removed the two screws on the top of the door and three screws on the bottom ot the door which allowed me to remove the front of the door. Third, using a nut driver, I removed the frame holding the inner glass to the door and removed that. Fourth, I removed the frame holding the broken glass to the door by removing the screws using my nut driver. I carefully removed the broken glass and vacuumed the channel that had the gasket in it. The gasket was fine so I did not have to replace it and will return it. I placed the glass in the frame on the gasket and reassembled the door in reverse order of how I had disassembled. All went smooth as silk.

I got online, and "Googled" bake element and Whirlpool (model #), and selected PartSelect by chance. The website had a diagram of my oven with parts and it was easy to select the right part. I paid extra to have it shipped overnight and it arrived the next day. I removed two screws, disconnected the old element, and replaced it with the new element. It worked!! I think I saved a lot of money by doing the repair myself. (I am a 66 yearl old woman and will choose PartSelect by choice for future appliance repairs.)

I removed the two screws that hold the element in place and then I pulled the element out and slid off the contacs and it was disconnected in less than two minutes. When it arrived I installed the new one the same way in less than 2 or 3 minutes and while I waited for thepart to arrive I got a chance to clean my oven and so all is well, I am very pleased with my purchase. simple replacement

Backed out two screws, disconnected two wires from faulty element, connected wires to new element, screwed back into place. (New element was ordered by phone and received the next day.)

Turn off the oven's breaker. Remove oven grates. Unscrew two screws holding in the bake element. Slowly pull the bake element out a few inches. Using pliers, CAREFULLY unattach the connectors from the ends of the bake element. DO NOT FORCE OR CRUSH THE CONNECTORS. Using your hands only, attach the connectors to the ends of the new bake element. Re-insert the element into the back of the oven. Re-insert the screws to attach the new element to the back of the oven. Turn the breaker back on. Turn the oven on bake to test the element. Go have a beer to congratulate yourself on saving $75 or more. Should take about 10 minutes if you're proceeding slowly & carefully. It'll take 2 minutes if you're reckless and get lucky, but it'll take 2+ hours if you're reckless and all goes wrong, causing you screw up the connectors and need to go buy some plus crimpers, etc.

Used screwdriver to unfasten the old element from the oven frame. Then unplugged the two wire plugs from the back of the old element. Reversed the process to install the new. Couldn't have been any simpler.

First I made sure it was in fact the lower bake element that was broken. I turned the oven on & noted the element did not glow red. I also used a laser thermometer to verify the element was at "room temperature" for the room it was in (the oven - about 200 degrees, given what the upper bake element was contributing.)
And close visual inspection showed that a section of te bake element had melted thru where something had recently spilled onto it.
Swapping it out was easy - turn off the electrical breaker controlling the oven, unscrew the bake element, disconnect the electrical contacts to it (which required pliers, since they had been on a Looong time, and a little care to not use the pliers too hard & thus break the wires or contacts), then reverse the process to install the new element.

It works great now.
