Repair was easy. Remove the seal ring with a flat blade screwdriver and drive out retaining pin. Pry out lower unit using two screwdrivers, one on each side. Once apart, use spring clip pliers to remove snap ring. Pull out shaft and replace. Clean and lubricate as you reassemble in reverse. Google the model number to get detailed instructions.

I was very happy with the customer services department and the support I received in identifying the part I needed for the repair. I received an email confirming my order with all details. I do wish you had a more cost effective shipping alternative, like Priority mail.
The repair went well and the mixer is back in business, for making those Chocolate Chip Cookie and brownies if you know what I mean.

The knob was attached to the new lever. I began to disassemble the mixer case so that I could replace the lever. However, it soon became apparent that this would be a major project involving many components and potential problems in getting the unit back together. Since all I wanted was to replace the knob, I simply knocked it off the new lever and forced it onto the old one. It is hard for me to understand why Kitchenaid would not make just the knob available.

The issue ended up being this little plastic clip. The repair took me about 20 mins alone to make. However, I realized how dirty the mixer was and spent another 30 - 40 mins detailing it.

watched instruction video (from Part Select), the demonstration was close enough to enable me to repair the mixer. Newer mixers are disassembled differently.

Opened beater , removed grease , took bearing off , removed alignment pins ,pulled shaft and pinion out , replaced parts , lubricated with new grease , assembled the whole drive . do not like the plastic gear or the clearance once assembled has a lot of slop for this type of drive .

received parts promptly, opened motor removed three screws installed worm gear . installed brushes external access.Buttoned motor up and tested operation. Very esy to repair with the supplied [correct] parts

Removed gear assembly & grease, installed new worm gear assembly & repacked with new grease. Most difficult part was disassembling of mixer.

Order part through parts select. it only took 3 days to receive part. The mixer was very easy to take apart and to replace the gear. it was back together in about 20 min. The video from kitchen aid to repair the unit is awsome. Thanks

I replaced the brushes. I didn't realize that I've put one of them wrong. Reminder for next time the brushes have to touch the rotor of the motor. It took me a little bit to understand but the brushes can go in and not touch the rotor. It works very quietly now. Thank you PartSelect for your infos and knowledge.

I how the video for replacing the worm gear on your website. It help me a lot. I followed step by step instruction display on video. It was great help.

I removed the screws on the back and base of the mixer. Took off the retaining ring and screws holding the mixer beater bar. Tapped out the retaining pin using an allen wrench and hammer. Carefully as not to scratch the unit. Removed the old grease, the screws holding in the worn worm gear. Replaced the gear, re-greased and reassembled the unit. To line up the retaining pin I used a very small allen wrench to get through the hole as it needed to set down all the way. Then when I wiggled it down it lined up the hole for the retaining pin. I tapped the pin back in place with the hammer and a larger allen wrench. Replaced the screws, lightly greased the gears. I had taken the "brushes" out earlier and learned that they go in a certain way. I also learned that the screw at the back by the wires, by adjusting it tighter or looser controls the speed lever. If your mixer won't work on low speed the screw has to be adjusted!

Per a video on this site, I removed the stand part, then removed the rear electrical cover and aluminum band which wraps around the mixer. Next, remove the drip ring and planetary gear (use a punch). Then remove the 4 screws securing the bottom housing and the 5 screws around the planetary gear housing. You should be able to pull the upper and bottom housings apart now. This exposes the control lever. Just unscrew it and replace it. Re-install all parts in reverse order.

I followed the video that was with the worm gear pausing at each step until I completed each step. The only different I did was to replace the grease in the gears and housing of my mixer. I figured with the gear busted, it was going to leave broken teeth in the grease. As I removed the grease I did find a couple of worm gear teeth. Thanks, Parts Select for the parts and video. Unscrew and dismounted the mixer, gather all pieces and screws, cleaned and washed every part, took away the old grease and replaced it with a new one, also looked carefully for the lost teeth and found them, Put grease in every part, put back and screwed all the pieces of the mixer, then tried the mixer which worked really well.
