PEB7226SF1SS General Electric Microwave - Instructions

First, I read the PartsSelect DIY report by Linda, Warsaw, IN. With confidence, I purchased the magnetron. Upon receipt, I took the built-in microwave out of the cabinet, set the unit on the kitchen floor, and was stopped cold by the Safety Torx nuts on the reverse of the unit. Borrowing the right wrench allowed the 20 minute start-to-finish part changeout and reinstallation of the unit in the cabinet to proceed. The old magnetron was the defective part. Discovery of the 10-year Parts-Only warranty on the less than 10-year old unit was insufficinet to guide me to take the unit in for their Labor bill to repair. New part in hand, it just was that easy - and assumed to be no less expensive.

Opened up back, saw a part that was burnt, so looked it up, on the website, ordered it, removed it with 2 screws then installed new one, I cleaned up the connector and put it back together. It's been working for a week now. Easy fix!

R & R - Remove old part,cleaned roller grove,Replaced old part with new one.Job done.

Open the shipping package the new roller guide comes in and removed it from the package. Open the microwave door and removed the glass turntable plate. Remove the broken roller guide ring and roller wheel/s. Clean the surface that the roller guide assembly rides on. Place the new roller guide assembly into the microwave. Clean the bottom surface of the glass turntable plate that the roller guide wheels ride on and put the plate back into the oven. Place a cup of water onto the turntable plate close the oven door and start the microwave. Looking through the door assure that the new roller guide assembly is rolling smoothly under the turntable plate. Stop the oven, remove the cup, reset the oven timer.

Took off microwave external case.
Used voltmeter to test where problem was and discovered it was the thermostat for the external interior of the microwave.
Noticed the thermostat was burnt out and plastic was melted.
Unscrewed thermostat and replaced it.
Tested Microwave before reinstalling and putting it back together.

I felt proud of myself for just taking time to get serial # ,call verify on serial # to match picture on internet.,which #did not match part, so I question, a re check ;thank goodness I did as the part would have been to large, so glad I ask question before mailing.

The key to this repair is attaching the spring once the rest of the assembly is attached. I primarily used a wratcheting screw drive to remove the assembly but used a socket attachment with the screw bit to finish it off.

First, I removed the spring entirely. In order to attach the spring, I expanded the spring by sliding quarters into each of the coils (I had a quarter in every coil in order to get the ends as close as possible). I then first attached the spring to the post on the right side. I would have preferred to attach it to the closure assembly arm as the angle to attach was much simpler with the spring detached however there wasnt enough room to work around the post.

I then adjusted the closure assembly arm to be aligned with the spring and with a little elbow grease, stretched the string the remaining 1/2" or so and connected it to the arm. Once connected, I opened the fridge door and was easily able to remove the quarters.

We removed the glass circular plate of the microwave. We replaced the original roller guide with the new part. Then we placed the glass plate back in its place. Quick and simple.

Removed the three screws holding the cover on. then rmoved the two wires from the capacitor. Removed the screw holding the end of the zener diode to the chassis. Removed the diode from the capacitor. installed the new capacitor and replaced the blown fuse then reversed the removal process.

Steps were straight forward.
Remove the trim between the microwave and the cabinet.
Disconnect the microwave from the cabinet
Unplug the microwave
Remove the microwave from the cabinet
Remove the screws in the back of the microwave in order to remove the cover
Remove the microwave cabinet cover
Using needle nose pliers, disconnect wire from the fuse (on top of the microwave)
Remove the one screw holding the fuse down (Phillips head)
Replace the fuse
Reconnect the wires

For this repair, the fuse actually melted the connector for one of the wires. As such, the wire needed to be replaced and it was part of the microwave's wiring harness, so I replaced the entire harness. To do so,

Starting at the one top end of the harness, replace the individual connections by disconnecting the original wire connection and putting on the new connection one at a time, making sure to verify that the wire colors match for each connection.
Go sequentially
The hardest connection to do is the bottommost (last connection) that connects on the bottom middle of the microwave. To access the connection, you need to open the access panel on the bottom of the microwave (It is stamped and tin snips are needed to cut the tabs to free up 3 sides - the 4th one acts as the hinge).

After the last connection is made, plug the microwave in and test it to make sure its working. Once test is complete:
Reattach the cover
Put the microwave back into the cabinet; plug it in
Reconnect the frame
Reattach the cabinet trim

I used this excellent guide to diagnose the problem: h You need a safety Torx bit to open the case, and carefully follow instructions to discharge the high voltage capacitor! Following the youtube instructions and a commenter's advice to use a 9V battery in series with the multimeter instead of the cumbersome 12 V car battery method, I found that the diode was defective (low resistance). This was easy to replace, but the microwave still did not heat. The diagnostics video cautioned that the tests used do not identify all bad magnetrons. The antenna on mine was discolored, so ordered a replacement, and this fixed the problem.

Removed old roller assembly and installed new roller assembly.

I placed the new hot plate in the old microwave. It worked perfectly, and no tools needed
