The Kitchenaid heavy duty mixer's motor would run but the mixer head would not turn.
Obviously the problem was in the gear box of the mixer. I disassembled the gear box by removing the four large screws holding the base then the four screws at the rear and center of the mixer. Then I removed the thin metal ring covering the five screws around the front of the housing by gently prying up with a small screwdriver. The five screws beneth the ring have to be removed with a small blade screwdriver turning them a round at a time in sequence until they are free. Gently pry the two housings apart with a screwdriver and lift our the lower half with the plantary gears. I found the drive gear was stripped. I went to PartSelect on the web, eaisly found the exploded view of the mixer's gear box and ordered the gear I needed. The gear is part of an assembly attached to the mixer housing with three screws. Work around the lubricant in the housing. Within four days I received the new gear, installed it by reversing the above procedures and the mixer is working again. The total cost was $34.85. Not a bad investment considering the mixer cost over $400 and would have been trashed for want of one part.

Disassembled gear housing and replaced worm gear/bracket assembly. The hardest part was cleaning and working around what looked like 2 pound of grease. I will contact you again if I need parts for anything. Thanks.

stripped nylon drive gear
Followed the repair instructions from the manual. ...
I did notice that the replacement part had an extension on it that allowed for the gear grease to be "pulled up" onto the drive gear ( the one that broke), while the unit is running. This feature was not on the original part, but was obviously an upgrade design which was added after my particular mixer was made. I think that the extension on the bracket will help prevent the new nylon gear from binding and stripping as we use the mixer from now on.
I'm glad that PartSelect had the more modern part on hand, and not just an "overstock" from the original, inferior design.

My stand mixer stopped mixing!
I watched a YouTube video all the way through, then watched each segment and followed along with the video. It was messier than the professional repair guy, but it worked out fine. This is not a difficult repair when you can watch a video and follow along. It saved me about $130.

Damaged the worm gear in our 300w mixer.
After stalling the mixer while mixing dough I found that the motor still functioned but the blade didn't move. I basically took the mixer into my shop along with a digital camera to record any complicated disassembly procedure I might have to deal with for reassembly and proceeded to disassemble the mixer. Once apart, I cleaned the mixer parts, removed the broken worm gear and bracket, and got online for someone that carried the replacement piece. PartSelect sent the replacement within 3 days and now it works great again.

Mixer suddenly ceased operation after sharp noise
To access the interior of the mixer, I first removed the single screw holding the cup-shaped part at the rear. Then I removed the 4 large screws on the under surface of the mixer head. Next I removed the bright metal ring around the planetary gear area by prying it off. I then pried the dish-shaped part off the shaft using a large-bladed screwdriver. This exposed 5 screws on the circumference of the planetary gear. By removing them, one can pull up the gears and see into the area below. I found the worm gear had fractured. By removing 3 screws at the base I extracted it for closer inspection, checking for any loose pieces. Beware of the jelly-like grease. The replacement part goes into position, and one then follows the steps in reverse.

Mixer still ran, but seemed to be getting very loose as if gears or a shaft were wearing out.
I followed the video provided online. The model shown was not exactly the same as mine, but very close. The step-wise progression demonstrated on the video helped a lot. I had to double check the video a couple of times which added to the work time....I could probably do it again without the video in under 1 hour. As shown in the video, I laid out an old towel across two pieces of 2x4 which helped keep the mixer head in a position that was easy to work on and also prevented scratches.

worm gear replacement
watched instruction video (from Part Select), the demonstration was close enough to enable me to repair the mixer. Newer mixers are disassembled differently.
