GDR977KW439 General Electric Dryer - Instructions

Dryer would turn on when you pushed the "on" button, but as soon as you let go, it would turn off. Found the plastic door switch cracked (from slamming door closed). Unplugged the dryer. Unscrewed the two screws inside the top of the door to unfasten the top panel. Took the top panel off. Then unscrewed the two screws on the side to unlatch the front panel. Used plyers to take the 3 wires off the switch and slid the switch through the front of the door. Juat remember where the wires go. Then inserted new switch and connected the wires. Vacuumed out the dryer and reassembled. It took about 20 minutes and was easy! If I can do it, you can!!!

Easier than I thought it would be. I was hoping it was the front bearing because replacing the rear bearing looked pretty gnarly. Unplugged the dryer from the outlet. Removed two screws inside the door frame. Lifted the top off. Unscrewed the two screws holding the front on. Lifted the front panel off, careful of the wires going to the door. Popped out the old front bearing by releasing the two clips at the top. The old bearing was pretty trashed. The two grey/green slides were in tatters and one of the white ones was missing. Not too much lint inside the dryer, but the lint trap was pretty clogged. Cleaned the insides out with the shop-vac. Inserted the new slides into the new bearing an snapped it back into place, careful to make sure the light went in the hole. The felt gasket at the botton was in good shape so did not replace it. Replaced the panels screwed them back to together and it fired up smooth and quiet.

I watched video supplied from parts select, only took about 30 minutes, hardest part was putting belt back on, couldn't fit hands in easily, but once I did it, dryer is like new, can't hear a thing.

Replaced the broken heat elements.

The clothes would get caught where the drum slide should be (it was almost totally worn down) and would leave black marks. I watched Parts Select youtube video. Bought the parts needed from Parts Select. They arrived within a couple of days. I replaced the 2 drum slides and no more getting caught. Took about 20 minutes.

Followed the Part Select video instructions which made the repair really easy!! Thanks for a job well done! ALSO.. the drum wobble was not caused by worn slides and felt. There are three screws holding the drum axle flange. Two of them fell out leaving the drum to flop about as it rotated. So we scavenged some screws from elsewhere on the dryer and problem solved. Once again.. thanks to Part Select for great instructional videos and great customer service ordering parts.

I unpugged the dryer. I removed the 2 long screws in the upper section of the door opening, allowing me to remove the lid of the dryer. This gives you access to remove the 2 short screws that hold the entire front panel of the dryer in place. I removed the front panel but left it plugged in (just lifted it and swung it open like a big door.) I reached under the drum and relased the drum belt from it's pullies. I removed the belt and then pulled out the drum, giving me access to the heating elements. I cut away the old elments with wire cutters. I followed the included instructions for stretching the new coils to the correct length (40.25" for inner coil and 48.25" for outter) and then restrung the elments. This part takes a little patience so that you don't overstretch the coils. I attached the terminals to the terminal blocks and hooked-up the wires. I checked the elements to make sure they weren't grounded to the base-plate as instructed. I put the dryer back together and plugged it in. I got to wear dry clothes later that same day. I did see a really good video on this operation

Ordered the recommended parts on-line and they showed up the next day. I followed the on-line repair video that described it all step-by-step.

Symptoms: Timer would not advance on cotton cycle. Long dry time on timed cycle. Troubleshooting: checked operation of heat setting switch. Checked for exhaust blockage. Tried to isolate heating coil wiring to check continuity, but by the time I dissasembled the dryer enough to access the coil terminals I could see one coil was broken. Disassembly and reassembly are easy. There are many good video guides on utube for this. Replaced the coil using the re-string kit,as the full assembly replacement with sheetmetal refelector is way too expensive. Also replaced the green drum slides while I had the dryer apart. I should have replaced the white ones too(next time). They are a low cost item that extends the life of these GE dryers.

Removed top cover and verified that control card was sending 240VAC to elements. Current check showed 0 amps which implied either both elements were open or motor switch was open. Removed front panel and drum. Resistance check showed both elements open. After receiving new elements, I removed old ones, stretched new ones to length as per instructions and strung them through the insulators. Connected wires to elements and re-assembled dryer. Worked perfectly. Being able to download the technical manual was a major part of being able to easily troubleshoot this problem.

To get to where the drum slides go you have to first remove the dryer top. Then you have to remove the two screws that hold the dryer front/door. Found inside the dryer about an inch down on both sides. Be careful because it will fall off. Lower carefully as there is an electric hook-up on the bottom of the door. On the door top are the brackets that the slides slip into. My dryer has 4 slides. Sold individually for some reason. You are done except for re-assembly. Slip dryer drum back on door, press the front until you hear it click back together. Put screws back in and top back on. You are done and no more screeching!

Followed the video on this site but did not have to remove wires. Just stand in front and let the front panel rest on your leg while you replace the slides. Quick and Easy!!!!

Removed door strike and latch, replaced, works like new.

The only tool used was a phillips head screwdriver. I removed two screws to lift the lid and two more screws to free the front panel, slid off the front panel, and had direct access to all 4 slides, replaced, reassembled, and good as new.
