The motor bearing had gone bad.
The difficulty was getting the motor out of the unit. It is held in by a snap-fitted support piece that gets in the way. After several failed maneuvers, I removed the fan from the motor (a job that would be easier if my hands were half-sized) and then extract the motor. Then the fan had to be replaced and tightened on the new motor. However, now that the job is done, I'm happy with the end result. The new motor runs quietly, and the unit is back in action.
