Part description

Commonly referred to as Dog Ears, these Agitator Directional Cogs are manufacturer approved replacement parts for various Whirlpool, Kenmore, KitchenAid, Roper, Estate, Inglis, Crosley, and Maytag Washers and Dryers. To ensure these are compatible with your machine, please see the "Model Cross Reference List" below. The Agitator Directional Cogs ratchet across the gear teeth in one direction and dig into the gear teeth in the other direction to create the needed agitation. Upper agitator stopped working
Followed the simple instructions on youtube, searching for "kenmore upper agitator doesn't work." There are a number of videos there. Find the notch on agitator cover and pry off the cover using a flat screw driver. Remove the nut in the center of the agitator using the 7/16 socket with extension. Remove upper agitator (mine came off easily but some may require removing the entire agitator, then pulling off the upper agitator). Remove assembly from inside and replace the dogs. Reassemble.

Cogs were worn down, thus the top of the agitator would not move
Removed fabric softener cover, inner cover and removed screw and washer. Replaced cogs, changed the inner seal ring and changed out screw and washer. Put it all back together and done. This is the 2nd time I've had to replace cogs since I've had the washer.

Agitator stopped working
Follow the videos and it's easy to do the repair. Spent more time cleaning the appliance than it took to do the repair, (shredded rubber from large washer part of the motor coupling and many years of dust). My only suggestion would be to turn down the front legs (feet) so it's easier to get the cabinet body under the front steel spreader piece of the cabinet frame. Also, breaking off the plastic tabs under the thrust spacer, as suggested in video, will prevent them from getting in the way when you reassemble the parts. First attempt one folded under the thrust spacer and prevented it from seating properly. A socket extension is a must to remove/install agitator bolt.

Agitator would not move & during spin cycle tub would not spin sounded like shaking a can with marbles in it
I looked at the pictures on the order form and thought I could guess what was damaged then I saw the trouble shooting section and it said that it could be two parts, I saw the price and ordered both. I watched the video on how to replace the parts I purchased, it only took me 30 minutes to replace both. My wife was so impressed she cleaned up after me and after I did a trial run and gave the OK she started washing my clothes. Thanks for making the video. Jay

Washer won't agitate or spin dry.
After disconnecting hoses, drain pipe and plug and bungee cording them to top panel, I used 2 wheeler to pull it out into work space. This model did not have the bolt you see in the videos under the cap. It had a plastic retainer with a spring. It took the 1/2" drive adapter to remove the retainer. The cog assembly pulled right out. It had a plastic ring that was easy to pull up to release the cogs. That took only 15 minutes to fix. The DIRECT DRIVE coupling took longer because I don't do this for a living. The end trim on the panel comes off by prying the bottom by pulling it straight out toward you with your fingers or a small screwdriver then pull them out and up to take them off. Remove two screws at the bottom ends of the panel and pull it out and rotate it up. The rest is like in the U tube videos..

It could have taken 5 minutes to repair. Thanks to the instructional video that was on the vendor site. However once i removed parts. I notice a buildup of nastiness. So i tended to that before i made the repair. Loved how easy it was to repair it.

Washer would not spin on spin cycle
I followed the videos and it went amazingly smooth. Watch the videos! I could have stopped at the Direct Drive Motor Coupling as this was the evident problem. The rubber coupling itself had developed oversized holes where the drive pins of the motor assembly connect to the drive pins of the transmission. However, having the clutch and directional cog assembly, I decided to install everything. Everything was easy to access, and although I had knee surgery the day before I was able to complete the repair with no damage to the machine or myself.

Machine would not agitate
In the end, I had to replace the agitator. It was very easy to remove the agitator by removing the fabric softener dispenser and the dust cap. Then I removed the bolt that holds the agitator, carefully separated the top from the bottom of the agitator. The cogs were won out. However what I did not notice was that the inside of the agitator that connects to the gear box, was also worn out. In the end, I replaced the agitator. Lesson learned is that if the bottom of the agitator does not move, it is better to check if the whole agitator needs to be replaced.
