Just a note to warn you the edges of all the panels on this toaster oven are as sharp as a razor. They weren't de-burred at the factory. Got two nasty cuts while doing this repair...be careful.

Door would no longer stay closed.
Tools needed: #2 Phillips screwdriver and long needle nose pliers.

Spring is located inside the case on the left, opposite side of controls. It connects the door bracket to the back of the case. Remove all plastic feet parts from bottom of unit by removing 12 screws. Unscrew the back panel (many screws) and slide it down to rem ove it. Shim open the left side panel from the back. Look for the broken spring parts and remove with pliers, forceps, or magnet. Use pliers to attach new spring, first to door bracket and then to hole in rear of case. Caution: metal edges are sharp.

The spring that governs the door opening and closing broke
It is a fairly easy project - just many small screws that need to be removed and then replaced. Those who have worked on this project before did a great job of walking us through what needed to be done - once all the screws were removed we use needle nose pliers to remove both halfs of the broken spring and attach the new spring - I did think I might not have the strength to pull the new spring from the door to the back of the oven and it did take a bit of time to finally reach the hole - the spring the dropped into place and all that was required was to reattach all the screws but first it required all of the holes to be perfectly aligned - once that was accomplished the door worked perfectly as did the toaster oven. Do follow the sequence of activities for this replacement project on Fix.com

Broken Door Spring
The instructions are clear and the replacement part is perfect. Replacing the spring itself is fairly simple; however reassembling the oven panels with 20+ screws is not simplistic. Once you disassemble the rear and side panels, aligning the holes again is quite the chore. It took me over 90 minutes to reassemble everything and I'm rea sonably capable with tools. Nevertheless, it cost me roughly $4.00 + shipping to replace the broken spring as opposed to over $200.00 for a replacement oven..

Broken Door Spring; door flopped open
I followed the very simple instructions that came with the email about the part being delivered. Simply, it was: Unplug the unit, remove the feet, remove the back, remove the damaged spring and replace. Then replace the back and feet. It was very clear, but not as easy as it sounds. It took a long time to remove all the very small sc rews. The damaged spring would not be easy to remove. I had to have someone help me. After it was in place, it took a while to get the screws put in; very hard to align since one must pull away the side of the oven a bit to get to the area where the spring must be replaced. Pulling the side out even a little bit caused the unit to become misaligned so the screws wouldn't go in easily. I only put back enough screws to hold the back in place; I have 15 screws left, LOL. It is okay because the back is only a cosmetic/safety panel. THE DOOR WORKS GREAT now... and, will hold until I have to buy a new oven.

Breville Door Spring
The Breville oven door is returned to the closed position by a long coil spring which is connected to the door at on end of a curved slotted bracket and to the back of the oven enclosure at a small 1/8” diameter hole. The door spring is quite stiff to expand so installing it will take some hard pulling. I used an pair of extended length n eedlenose pliers that worked well. Also, the metal enclosure edges are very sharp so use care when handling and pulling on it. Keep band aids handy.

There are many many very small phillips head screws you have to remove. They are easily stripped so be sure your screwdriver fits tightly into the head or you will strip them.

Search the internet for directions on how best to do this. Below is how I did it.

1. Remove screws holding the side door so you can pull it back enough to access the curved slotted bracket and remove the spring if it is still attached at that end. I think you also need to remove two long black plastic parts that have 4 screws each.

Note that there is a pin that must be located in the slot. Keep it in place. It guides the door as it opens and closes.

2. Remove the screws on the back of the oven and slide the back up to access the area where the spring attaches there. It is a small hole in the oven enclosure used for no other purpose.

3. Remove the spring if still attached.

4. Connect the new spring to the hole in the curved bracket at the door front. Using long needlenose pliers, get a good hold on the other end of the coil spring. Pull hard to extend the spring and hook it in the hole in the enclosure. Be sure not to block the hook at the end of the spring with the pliers.

5. Check the door operation to be sure it opens and closes properly.

6. Reposition the oven back and all the screws you removed in that and the side.

Good luck

Door falls open
Remove all screws both feet. Remove all screws on back. With small Phillips head. After removing back carefully rock top and sides towards back. Open door and remove broken spring and remove broken spring from hole in back frame.
One end of spring has a slightly smaller loop. The larger end hooks through door-easier to access with d oor open. Spring lay’s along side of oven. I used thin nylon string and pushed a loop through frame-hooked spring- pulled spring through frame. Reassembled oven. I wasn’t strong enough to pull spring with pliers and was concerned if pliers slipped I was pulling towards my face. String was easy.

Replace door spring
Because my spring was not attached, I wasn't sure where to attach the back end of the spring. I ended up attaching it to a screw hole at the very back of the unit.

You'll definitely want to attach the door end first. Stretching it to attach at the back takes a lot of tension so it would be very hard to pull and attach to the door lever.

The door seems tighter than previously, but may be because it's now a new spring.

Broken Door Spring
I've never been good at fixing things, so I'm certain that no one would want to follow my instructions on how to fix the door spring on their toaster oven. That being said, I am very grateful for those who shared their experience and detailed instructions, right down to the number of screws they had to remove. Their guidance was excelle nt, so if you have to replace your door spring on your toaster oven, I highly recommend you read all the submitted install instructions. I couldn't have done it without them. Btw, I highly recommend wearing gloves when working with the metal siding as one reviewer suggested. The metal edges and corners are sharp. Also, know that spring is really tight, so a little muscle is needed. Good luck!
