Product Description

This is a genuine head valve for nailers and staplers. The head valve is responsible for controlling the flow of air to the cylinder. When the trigger is pulled, it creates an imbalance of pressure, which opens the head valve and fires the piston. The head valve is prone to wear over time, so it is important to inspect it often. The seals on the head valve or the body itself can begin to harden and eventually crack, and this results in air leaking from the gun exhaust. For this repair you will need an Allen wrench adjustable wrench and a screwdriver. This plastic head valve is sold individually.

I wrote about this working on an old craftsman brad nailer. I used the wrong model # in my original inquiry. The correct model # is 351-184240. Will this Head Valve replacement fit my brad nailer? Also, can you tell me which O-rings I need to get for it?
For model number 351-184240

After installing the parts from Fix.com I applied some 3 in 1 oil into the area where the piston is and also where your air nozzle connects. the more oil the better, hook up the air hose and good to go. You tube has many videos for helping as well.

Air tool seems to leak air when you pull the trigger, and no impact
Simply take off the top cap. The Head valve is inserted inside the head cap, and usually gets very brittle and cracks with age.
Pull out the old head valve.
Transfer the large O-ring, spring and flat washer from the old valve to the new one. Insert the flat washer, then spring into the new valve and insert back into the head. Be sure to use mineral oil for air guns. Regular air tool oil can damage the rubber O-rings

Just stopped working and was leaki g air out of the trigger.
Started internet search to figure out what was wrong. After a couple of u-tube videos ... learned it was the head valve had went bad so with that being said started searching for a replacement part only to find that it was discontinued beacuse of the age of the tool. Searching the internet came across fix.com and they could get the part but was on back order. It took about 2 1/2 weeks to get the part. Took the head off the tool removed the head valve, spring, spacer and saved the o-ring... reused the o-ring, spring and spacer on the head valve. Oiled everthing up and put it all back together ... tightened the head bolts down evenly, until snug and 1/8 of a turn after tight ... plug the air hose in ... tool works just like it did when it was new!! Thank you fix.com

Combination Brad Nailer/Stapler would not operate
The plastic head valve inside the gun disintegrated. Common problem with old guns. Remove 4 screws (part1) with hex wrench and pull off back cap on gun. Try not to damage gasket (part3). Clean out all debris left by old head valve, If you can still use the o-ring from the head valve keep it. The original o-ring is not available buy I orde red a 33mmx2mm online and it works fine. Install per diagram using Vaseline or 3 in one oil on o-rings and cylinders. Make sure to put the flat face of the seal (part5) facing the back of the gun against the metal seal (part4), or it will leak air. Work the new head valve/seal inside the cylinder at the back of the cap to make sure that it compresses inside when it is tightened against the interior spring (part6). Re-Install 4 screws tightening opposite sides gradually so that head valve compresses into cylinder when tight. Should be good to go.

The head valve in both my air stapler and small finish gun had broken up into several pieces and would not direct air to rerun the ram so it was in a fully Estes position
Disassembled guns and found both had bad head valves. Went to craftsman and replacement.com Where both stated parts were obsolete and no longer available but after a couple of hours of research i finally found fix.com the only place I located the after market replacement valve

Used craftsman illustrated part breakdown to see how everything fit together. Throughly Cleaned all broken pieces out of cylinder and change o ring seals from old valve to the new one. Then reassembled both guns. A couple of pointers the nailer rams will only fit one way. The guide tracks must be aligned to the front of the gun to preclude binding. A light coat of petroleum jelly protects the o rings and lets you use less force to put the parts together.

Old head valve was made Of a carbon looking material. New one look to be Teflon so they should hold up longer.

After reassembly check operation the load up and get to work
