Replace Shifting Lever
You must compress the spring that holds the shifter in place before attempting to remove the 3/8" pin that holds the shifter arm in place. Even with the spring compressed and pressure on the pin relieved the pin could not be removed. I resorted to a pneumatic air hammer to push the pin through then removed it completely using vise-grips .

Shift handle (lever) broke and had to be replaced.
The handle is only held on by a steel pin secured by a cotter pin. What looks like a 5 minute job might be a nightmare. You might need the some better than average tools and some mechanical experience if if you have an older machine. First there is a large spring on the back side of the shift lever. You will need to use a large clamp t o compress the spring against the side to take the pressure off the shift lever mounting rod. If you don't compress the spring you likely wont get the old handle off but if you do, the spring will push the mounting rod inside the machine and then you'll have more problems. Once that is done, remove the cotter pin in the pin holding the shift lever. If your lucky the pin will slide out and you remove old handle and install the new one. I was not so lucky. The pin was seized in the mounting rod of my 15 year old Snapper. Liquid Wrench over light did not help. Heat did not help. Trying to tap it out with a light hammer did nothing but expand the top of the pin making it impossible to remove. I ended up having to cut all the visible top off so it was flush with the side of the old handle. I then had to drill most of the pin out if the mounting rod. After I was drilled about half the screw out, I was able to heat the mounting rod up with a torch and use a metal punch to knock the remaining part of the pin. After getting a new pin from local hardware store I was able to install the new shift lever with no other issues. The pin is hard, you will need quality drill bits if you have to take the same route I did. The area is difficult to access with a drill and other tools. I am a certified mechanic and it still took 2.5 hours. Frustrating is all I can say about this repair. Good luck.

Prudent to release spring pressure so shift rod retainer pin can be remover and re-installed. Used c-clamp and released spring pressure with aid of vise-grip pliers to keep c-clamp from slipping. Fiddly process but was able to remove cotter pin and retainer pin so rod was released from mower. Since the c-clamp remained in position, inst allation of new part was a snap. A reverse of the above.
