Hi Louis, Thank you for your question. If you are testing the defrost thermostat for continuity with a multimeter on the Rx1 setting when it is cold, it should produce a reading of zero. If it is warm, between 40 to 90 degrees F, then you should receive a reading of infinity. If you do not get these results, then you will need to replace the defrost thermostat. We hope this helps!

Fridge and freezer were not cooling. Discovered It would work if Temperature was set at MAX setting
I was very hesitant to tackle it because I know nothing about appliances but I watched the video on Installing the Defrost Thermostat and it looked very simple. I unplugged the fridge. I removed the shelves and back panel of the freezer, and found the defrost thermostat. I clipped the wires and removed it from the line, (it just snaps o n and off). I connected the new one to the same colored wires and snapped it on the line and put everything back together. VERY SIMPLE! Who knows what a repair guy would have cost, probably a minimum of $200. I fixed it for under $40.

Refrigerator warm, freezer cold
The only thing that prevented me from just buying a new fridge was the wait time to get one that would fit in the preexisting space. That led me to search for a possible DIY fix since I didn't have anything to lose. Anyways, the coils in the freezer were frosted over - another symptom of the defrost thermostat. Part came within a coup le days. Took the back panel off, (lift up on freezer drawer - comes right out) and then defrosted everything with the hair dryer which took the longest amount of time. Cut wires for defrost thermostat, connected with marine grade butt connectors (have heat shrink ends), covered with electrical tape, put everything back together. Been running perfectly for two weeks with no issues. $1,370.00 saved = awesome.

Defrost cycle stopped working
It would frost over in a week or two. Uplugged the unit. Took off the back plate in the freezer compartment. Used a small room fan to melt the frost. That took less than five minutes. Cut the two wires on the old thermosatat, which came apart in my hands as I removed it. Used crimpers on the wire crimps to splice in the new thermosat . Clipped it on the copper pipe. Replaced the back plate. Plugged it in, turned it on. It's been a month now, and no frost visible on the coils, so I guess it's working. My wife thinks I am a genius. Thanks!!!
