should the discharge side blade turn stiff when blades are disengaged? opposite side blade spins freely. when blades are engaged seems to have more vibration than normal that I'bve experienced on any othe tractor. Is the stiff turning blade because of faulty mandrel bearing?

Hello Don, thank you for reaching out to us. A stiff blade on the discharge side when disengaged is normal. Your mower deck is equipped with spindle brakes that clamp against the spindle pulleys to stop the blades immediately when disengaged for safety. The fact that the opposite blade spins freely suggests that spindle brake is worn, missing its return spring, or the brake pad is no longer making proper contact. That side should also be stiff when disengaged, so it is worth inspecting the brake linkage and pad on that spindle. To diagnose the vibration, disconnect the spark plug wire, then engage the deck lever with the engine off to pull the brake pads away from both pulleys. Spin both blades by hand, they should now spin freely and quietly. If the discharge side blade still feels rough or produces a grinding noise when spun with the deck engaged, the mandrel bearing has failed and the mandrel assembly, part number FIX11813294, needs to be replaced.
