The original ice bin was sitting incorrectly in the ice maker because some of the clips were broken. When it filled with ice, the ice would cause the bin to become displaced.
AS was described in the suggestion offered on the website, I used a needle nosed plyers to break apart the clips in the original ice bin so I could remove it from the ice maker and easily snapped the new ice bin into place. Easy peasy.

the clips were broken on the ice bin
i dumped the ice out of the bin into a bowl uncliped the ice bin and replaced with the new bin just by pushing it into the clip holes
